Timing is off with poor mans R
Finally got my engine together this weekend.
b16 head on a b18c block, using a mugen head gasket, stock cam gears.
The problem is that I set the cam timing and everything lined up good. When i started the car it started up every time, however the car wouldn't rev over 2500.
I checked the ignition timing and it was way off. I moved the distributor all the way towards the firewall and it got it closer but it still is quite a bit off (the white line is lining up with the mark on the cover). I know that the mark on the cover is supposed to line up with the three other marks.
when i did move the distributor all the way forward the car would rev better(wouldnt stutter).
my guess is that the timing is off a tooth, the only problem with this theory is that when its all put together the cam marks line up and the crank mark seems to be dead on.
Is the mugen head gasket messing up the timing?

Re: Timing is off with poor mans R (chadmasterc)
codes that I have are 8 and 20. would this affect my situation?
When i set the timing I made sure the cam sprocket marks line up. and the mark on the crankshaft sprocket lined up to the mark on the oil pump. When i put the timing belt cover on the white mark does line up with the timing belt cover mark.
now when i start the car it starts and idles fine. It is very hesitant to rev( plus i dont want to mess anything up so ive only revved it up a few times to 3000 max)
to check ignition timing, I let the car warm up to operating temperature, jumped the diagnostic connector with a wire spliced on each end, and got the idle down to 750rpm. when i checked the timing with the timing gun it intially showed the white mark lining up with the mark on the timing belt cover.
I advanced the distributor all the way and checked the timing again, it was better but not nearly close enough, the mark is about halfway between the white mark and the other three marks. so basically it is running very retarted.

What timing belt are you using? The Mugen HG shouldnt throw off IGN timing that much. Where on the Eastern Shore are you? Im here too.

Re: Timing is off with poor mans R (Cory man)
Im on kent island, Problem ended up being that i had two wires switched around at the distributor. I still need cam gears and a tune cause the car still runs like crap.
