Default Timing belt/Cam Gear Q...

Everytime I pull off my valvecover I notice the timing belt has worked its way over to the drivers side edge of the cam gears.

Is there any chance it could work its way all the way off and screw me over while driving??

I don't know that it's ever actually gotten over the edge at all, but everytime I see it, it seems to stay about 2-3 mm away from the edge. I'm just scared that it *might* go further.

Is a little belt movement normal, or should it stay smack dab in the middle of the gears? If it's not normal, what could be the problem?

Yes it is normal. However if it moves excessively too far then you tensionor may be going bad, meaning the belt is not tight enough.. Mine was near the edge too when I had that issue with the distributor, but I didnt install the gears and I still have my timing cover on so I guess it would rub there first before anything else..

Hmm, well I've got a brand new tensioner on it.

See the thing is.....I never really bothered to take a close look at it before, so then when I saw it the other day, I just thought to myself 'shouldn't this be right in the middle of the gears?......maybe I'm just paranoid.

I guess I won't know if it goes too far over until it's too late

Double check the tension on the belt if it's got you sweating. As long as it's right, there is no need to worry about it. Short of the belt breaking, it will not come off of the sprocket (gear).

Thanks for the reassurance, I think I'm paranoid....the belt tension is really good.

i had the same thing happen to me, but mine would wiggle from one side to the other. i thought the tensioner was bad, or that one of the cams was bendt. it was actually that the exhaust cam gear had a broken leg, and it would make it wabble! hope you find the source of your problem!
