Ticking sound coming from z6 head
I have a 97 civic with a d15b non vtec block and a z6 head. The car runs great with no issues at all. My only issue is a ticking sound coming from the drives side (#1 cylinder) area of the head. I did redo the valve lash which really didnt help much. The tick doesnt get louder or quieter no matter if its idling or its at 5500 rpms. Sometimes it will go away a little in the higher rpm range but for the most part stays the same. Bout the only time i dont hear it is if im at a steady throttle or let off the gas completly going down the road. My only thought is that maybe i didnt get the lash just right. Any opinions that you guys may have? I know the block is good cuz i had a different z6 head on and it was quiet.

Well it sounds like a really loud typewrighter lol. I knew they always had a tick to them but i never heard one quite this loud. I guess ill just try redoing the lash. I might of not had a couple just right. The only time its acually loud is under load.

Could be an exhaust leak on that exhaust port. It's hard to tell sometimes between valvetrain noise and a blown manifold gasket. My y8 is a bit noisy but its more or less due to high mileage and wear issues because the previous owner thought oil changes were over rated.

I had a really loud tick one time in a h22. Adjusted valves, no change, but it drove fine. This lasted about 2 weeks until all of a sudden it turned into a clacking, accompanied by the oil light. A damaged rod bearing was the problem.

Well the exhaust leak could be it too. It does leak between the head and manifold on the drivers side. The bottom end was good. I put a friends head on it and the motor was silent. Put mine back on and its there again. Ive adjusted the valves a couple times. Tho the engine wasnt 100% cold but it wasnt real warm eaither. That doesnt seem to affect it any. Its not getting any better but not any worse eaither. Also it will do it at an idle on these cold mornings weve been having. (I live in wisconsin) but once the idle starts commin down it goes away.

Also while im at it. The car likes to come close to dying or stall if it idles long enough after it warms up. Could that be cuz the p2p is looking for a knock signal and i dont have one?
