Smog question for JDM B16 swapped 92-95 civics......What cat did you run to pass CA BAR
I have a 92 civic with a JDM B16, and am having trouble passing smog. i have used seafoam in the oil then changed it, ran seafoam in the gas all the way down, put on a new Denso O2 sensor, and added a magnaflow 2.25 inch cat and failed the 15MPH test (NOx was at 1100+ and needed to be below 800). I have since added another magnaflow cat, and still failed (i don't know the numbers because a friend took it to the smog place and didn't look at the numbers and didn't get a print out since it wasn't an official test).
the only other thing i can think of is to clean or change the PCV valve. However, i am also wondering if i should just change the whole system to the 1994 Del Sol system ( http://www.hondaautomotivepart...EC%29 )since i am still using the D16z6 system?
TIA

i had the same problem with my b16, ended up being a bad cat. So i bought a universal one from autozone and it passed. hope that helps.

Make sure you are running a US B-series stock exhaust manifold and not some aftermarket header. The stock cast-iron manifold has a big affect on emmissions output.
I have a friend that passed smog here in S.CA with his JDM ITR engine in his 97 ITR. He obviously had to apply all of the US smog equipment, EVAP, performed the CKF mod/trick, ran a US OBD2 ecu, used a complete GSR exhaust manifold piping + muffler, and passed visual & tailpipe.
You might want to follow in the same manner in regards to being OBD1 US B-series smog compliant, if you haven't already.

I am running the stock JDM exhaust manifold. i wouldn';t think that would be a big problem, but it is something i will look into. Thanks.

The "high flow cat's" take a little longer to heat up and therefore work efficient.
The 15mph is the hardest part of the test. First the cat cools off by the time the info has been entered, and the test is usually in the lower rpm range.
They will work. They just need a tech that understands about Aftermarket cats.
Also it has been hot the last two weeks, so make sure the tech uses a fan in front of the car and if you can get the test done in the morning when it is cooler.
Also when you use the Seafoam do it thru a small vacuum line directly into the IM.
One more thing. Your O2 reading should be 0.0 to 0.2 If it is up to 0.7 the cat is not warm enough.

I went early in the morning that time i failed. I have used some Seafoam in the vacuum line also. My O2 readings were low, and it took me about 30 minutes to drive to place, which was mostly freeway driving. it should've have been warm enough. Maybe the magnaflow cat just isn't doing it.
