Default Shifter skewed to the left

My shop is installing a B16A gen 2 JDM engine into my 93 del sol si. It's installed and I am just waiting on a replacement distrib. The shifter is listed to the left and has lots of resistance. The mechanic says he is using 94 del sol vtec linkages. What is likely to be the problem?

okay, my mechanic is sure he has the right linkage. The engine is not completely installed just yet, we are waiting for a front trans mount. Should I be concerned about the trans? What should I look for?
