sharing my b20 experiences thru obd0 obd1 and obd2
i have a completely stock '96 jdm b20b that i bought in '02 and i've had in a '90 integra rs, '92 integra gs auto, and now my '98 gs.
'90 rs
i first had it in the '90 rs, everything else but the intake was stock, including the stock p-shooter exhaust, and small port b18a intake manifold. Stock obd0 ecu, but i used an adj. fpr to raise the fuel pressure a few points. The performance was anemic.
So i put my 'b18b style' intake manifold on (actually came with this b20) and it certainly opened up the midrange a bit. power curve hit earlier. I only ran a best 16.48 1/4 freak time with it on cheap regular tires. so the car was no faster than stock.
'92 gs auto
It must have been the rich running obd1 ecu because this engine lit this car up and turned night into day. Everything else was as stock as the '90swap, except i left the stock intake in this time. The auto was a dog with the b18a, but the b20 would squeal a tire shifting into second. When i put the b18a intake manifold back on (for the egr valve for emissions) it restricted it a bit, but it was still an automattic monster. i recently junked that car.
'98 gs
so i swapped the same b20 into my '98 gs 5 speed, everything else stock, andddd...... it feels stock. The powerband moved slightly, but it feels just as anemic as the b18b did. I'm considering a obd1 conversion now, and possibly a good street tune.
For the record, i'm not trying to build a racing car here, this is just my dd, and it needs to be a quiet and smooth as possible. All i really care about is getting my b20 torque back.
So what's up? did honda throttle back the rich obd1 b18b ecu's when they made obd2? Any other experiences out there?
notes:
Had the same b20 swapped into all 3 integra generations, kept things stock tho. obd0 was ho hum, obd1 was WOW, obd2 is back to ho hum

Re: (RotiEatter)
well i almost did leave the '98 alone, but then i got this major oil leak on a trip and ran it with half the oil gone, and then couldn't find the leak source at that point, so i just went ahead and swapped it hehe

Re: (chad)
i can vouch for the difference in how a b20 runs off of obd1 vs obd0. makes a big difference. and i did it in the same car, so weight has NO factor in my findings of this. i have a usdm b20 and when it was in my 91 integra (obd0), it felt like a turd. but when i did the obd1 conversion to the car, it came to life and actually felt like it went somewhere.
so no need to be a dick about what he posted. he didnt make any outlandish claims or hp numbers in his post. just what he found from his personal experiences.

Re: (chad)
yes its all seat of the pants, and no one is obligated to believe me, but .2 L of displacement increase should be unmistakable. the weight doesn't matter, as i was comparing each car against itself.
