Default real purpose of BARing a swapped car?

so im about to swap in a motor into my 99civic hatch. btw im in california. im really confused on how things work here with motor swaps. what are my options so i can pass smog? i was thinking of either an obd2 gsr/si/ls B-series.

what is the real purpose of BARing a car? is it so that when a cop gives me a state-ref ticket, he'll just leave me alone, cuz the car is BARed? i dont want any hassle from cops. just a legal smogged car.

to put it bluntly, you need to BAR it because you're putting in a motor that was not originally there from the factory. Once another motor is swapped in no smog shop will touch it unless its BAR'd. Do a search and you'll find tons of info

They won't be giving you a state ref ticket if the motor is Bard unless you have someother type of non compliant modification... Your 99 hatch is an obdIIb car.. stay within the same obd and you wiull be good to go.. Do a 99-01 gsr or 99-00 si.. Add knock, ckf and vtec to your harness and extend the secondary o2 and you'll be good to go....

some of my questions have been answered. but now, im pretty sure im gonna get a b-series swap. in cliff notes, my car came with an obd1 civic motor, and i can't smog it. the question is now. can i smog and register the car with a legal usdm b-series wap, even if the swap is not BAR'd? dont i just have to pass emissions and visual?

Your obd1 swap will not ref... It won't pass the visual and it definitely will not pass the obdII diagnostics... They are going to plug into the serial port and get nothing....

Get a 99-00si or 99-01 gsr or ls swap and you'll be good to go.... Get it all installed.. Drive it around for a week and make your appointment with the REF..... If you are really on a budget you can probably find a y8 swap for about $800 and just return your car to stock....

unless i get a state ref ticket, i should be fine running around with a 99-00 si motor, right?

on a side note, what are the costs of a BAR?

you'd be fine until someone pulls you over or its smog time for you.
you might as well get everything in order and just contact a local smog ref with your questions. then go and get it tested. then you'll be in the clear.
