Tell us your definition of a poor man's Type R...
I would say:
B18C1`block and head (or PR3 head)
Skunk2 manifold
JDM ITR pistons
CTR intake cam
Reprogrammed P28 to better-than-P73 specs
This set-up should yield similiar whp to a B18C5, but be much cheaper. Don't forget that the power won't mean as much if you mate it to wrong tranny. I'd get a Type R tranny or a B16A tranny and add an LSD like Quaife, or Kaaz, etc.
I've always said that for cheaper you can build a B18C1 and beat the **** out of a B18C5 - even though i've got a B18C5

two i know about...
ITR block/GSR head
jdm ITR pistons(maybe headgasket)
oem R cams(sometimes after market)
custom gearing tranny(close to ITR)
GSR block/PEE16 head
CTR pistons
oem R cams
gsr tranny(but i would go with si or itr)
plus jdm header and other basic bolt-ons... the name is just what it says, poor man's way to get power close
to the ITR motor with out spending alot of money... they also can be strong motors.. i almost went this route.
