OT: Wich setup for my 97 240sx?
hehe Welp, yes i realize this is HONDA tech but all the nissan sites are gay and none of them will give a 3rd party unbiast opinion. so i ask my family, HT.
my car: 1997 Nissan 240sx SE, OBDII (grr god damn emissions system) Im also aquiring a 1990 CRX for a daily driver this weekend. so i can have my 240 down for a month or more if i need to.
Engine setups
1) RB25DET - Inline 6 2.5 liter single turbo from the R33+ nissan skyline GTS-T, swap isnt a major headache BUT it will never pass emissions, so i would have to swap it every year to get by emissions. engine is good to 400whp without any major problems and will easily put me in the 12's down the road. only hard part would be finding a good service manual for it a place in austrailia sells a translated JDM nissan one for 150$...
2) SR20DET - the ever popular 2 liter inline 4 single turbo, ranging from 200-230 WHP depending on generation, this one i MIGHT be able to get through emissions with some help from JWT ( http://www.jimwolftechnology.com/ ), i probably wouldnt have to swap the motor every year BUT if i did, it wouldnt be much of an issue. SR is good to mid 13's without major upgrades
3) Boosting the stock KA24DE, the damn truck engine. I have my serious dobuts about doing this because...well...i left hondas to get AWAY from boosting an engine that wasnt boosted from the factory. the KA's stroke is 96mm, my friend told me "thats like carying a couch on stilts" and i agree. that engine does NOT belong in a 240. setup would be good for low/mid 13's but for how long...and with what problems... a stock replacment motor can be sourced easily and cheaply but i dont want to replace the motor every 8 months because it shoots a rod out the side of it under 10psi.
there are ALWAYS ways around emissions, and i have looked into a few of them. but this is hypothetical on the grounds i do have to test next may.
thanks honda-tech

Re: OT: Wich setup for my 97 240sx? (poison)
Oh i forgot to add
sport compact car is doing an article on swapping the RB25 into a s13. they are in the middle of the write up right now (swap being done at HAsport hehe )
so this will cause a couple things to happen
1) influx of people saying "oh my god you can run 13's for cheap as **** with a nissan 240sx, im selling my XXX to buy one"
wich will inturn cause the price of skyline engines to DOUBLE. there just arent enough of them...
2) the price for parts would go DOWN because more people would have them, there would be ALOT more information about the swap, but how many ricers will try to do this then kill themselves because they cant handle a 13 second car...

haha, so true, I think that it broils down to how much work that you want to the car every year. The RB25 would be more work in that if you do pass emissions then you have to rip it out, etc, etc. The sr20 would just a swap that you just drive around in and not care about it breaking. If I was you, you said that you a daily driver, I would go with the RB25, cause you can afford to have it down for days not care about miss work and the extra power would be nice.

personally i think the sr20 because of the emissions and i just like those motors. the rb would be super cool but it might be a lot of trouble. oh and maybe honda parts will go down in price because of all of the ppl getting nissans. i guess those are only pipe dreams but good luck and keep posting.

Re: OT: Wich setup for my 97 240sx? (gumbybum)
an rb would be different and the torque would just be insane in a car that about 2500lbs... a built KA would be sick too and the torque of a 2.4 turbo would be nice.... Because everyone is jumping on the bandwagon and buying sr's... its going to be cheaper for u to build a ka and if u were going to spend that much on an sr, u might as well fork over the little extra cash to go rb... So i'd pick an rb first, then a built ka over an sr... theres some kid that makes over 600whp on a built t66 ka... I saw the video of his car on one of the nissan boards... he has a 97 or 98 240 with full interior and he ran 10.7 or something like that

I also would like to say get the RB25 but because of the smog ***** and if things break, I will have to say get the SR20 because of the cheaper prices and avaliablity. just my .02

Skyline motor would be sick, but I think that the Sr20 is the most practical. And you can still get over 300hp out of it with an upgraded turbo and intercooler etc...

Why RB25? Because its different? I'll take the good old SR20 thanks. Like Sport Compact said, 300 whp is just a turbo, and intercooler, and some ECU tuning away.

why rb25?
inline 4 taxing to make 350whp
inline 6 making 350whp with a front mount, the RB is good to 20PSI on a STOCK BLOCK. all you need is a good fuel setup.
and yes, to be diffrent. the only thing the 240's have is the SR. its been done MANY times.
but unforutionatley the deal on my CRX fell through, so im probably gonna KA-T and do somthing else on the side.

Damn you just cannot find a cheap Honda.
Try Trinity's classified thread
She has a 90 HF on there I believe, not 100% sure though.

money you save on custom fabrication jobs for the rb, you can put into the sr (quicker easier install, more reliable, faster with saved $$$ put back into the sr... but the RB if you can sdo it will own any honda on the road lol

Re: (Fibercus)
2 things need to be custom fabricated, a transmission bracket (40$) and a driveshaft (200$)
so there isnt much fabrication for a RB
so there isnt much fabrication for a RB

Get an SR20det out of an s15 silvia spec r with the factory 6 speed and 250bhp. Stock internals good to 400-450rwhp.

too bad thats harder to swap into a s13/14 than the RB is.
its damn near impossible to swap a s15 sr20det
edit: those engines are like 6000 too
**** that i could fully build an rb for that price.

Re: OT: Wich setup for my 97 240sx? (Kamin)
how is is harder to swap a s15 than a rb motor? s15 is a straight up swap and motors aren't 6000$ anytime i've seen them. Here's my friends motor on this other page about 240's, rb26dett! yes it is still twin turbo and yes the firewall is untouched no matter what the other jackasses say. I've done a s15 swap into a 95 240sx as well and i have to say, i wasn't impressed with it too much, maybe low 13's on about 12-15psi. cant beat the skyline power and torque!

Re: OT: Wich setup for my 97 240sx? (HavokRacing)
ok i stand corrected on how hard the s15 is to install
BUT the s15 motorsets range from 5000-5500 and clips from 6000-7000
and how did you get a TT rb motor in a USDM 240sx? custom mounts?
because there is barley room for 1 turbo near the steering rack.

Re: OT: Wich setup for my 97 240sx? (Kamin)
we used a s15 lower crossmember and it bolted to the chassis and the motor bolted to it! we went into the whole thing not sure what we'd have to fabricate up but it ended up being very straight forward. He's running no downpipes right now, we're going to have tomake some curvy 2.5" ones out the side!
