Need some help...the hybrid doesn't pull hard in the upper RPMs anymore.
Well, something has to be wrong with my hybrid right now. It's a '94 B18C1 with an AEM CAI, Spoon header, NO cat, and Thermal full exhaust. It seems like it's just not pulling hard like it used to from 7k RPM to redline. I decided to change some things thinking it was just routine maintenance. I changed...
- plugs (Bosch Platinum +4)
- wires (MSD)
I bought a new fuel filter, but haven't installed it yet (one of the damn lines is on there TIGHT). I've got a new cap and rotor on the way also.
I think I've had a bad O2 sensor for awhile now though. Sometimes the CEL will come on, but sometimes it won't. Would this have anything to do with my problem? A couple of months ago at the dragstrip my car would actually cut out when I hit 7k RPM in 3rd gear. It WOULD NOT do this in 1st or 2nd though. I thought this might be a fuel issue and that maybe I need a fuel pressure regulator to bump up the pressure. I was thinking my car might be running a little lean up top.
ANY help would be appreciated.

this might sound like a silly one, but check your oil. if your oil pressure is low then the vtec will kick in and out sometimes.
good luck.
good luck.

oh yeah...definitely change that fuel filter too...use a 3/8 impact gun to pop the banjo bolt out, otherwise youre likely to bend and rip the bracket right of the firewall with a regular wrench/ ratchet. also lose those p.o.s. bosch spark plugs and get some ngk's or denso's in the stock heat range.

Yeah Todd-
check the oil. I met a guy with a '98 Teg and he complained that his car felt like it was running 20 second quarter milers. We put a quart of oil in and it still was not registering on the dipstick. I would do that along with that fuel filter. If it still persists change that O2 sensor

yeah change the fuel filter ..oil...the bosch plugs need to go also...make sure the plugs are gapped correctly and in the stock heat range...whens the last time you checked timing if ever? good luck!

No one seems to like the Bosch plugs. Hmm...the car seemed to run a little better once I changed to them last week.
I'll have to check the oil again. Maybe the hatch is eating it up.
Timing was just reset. Should be fine.

b18c are known for eating old when pushed hard, I go through oil real quick but then again I also have a leak.

the plugs were a bad idea
dont waste money on the 4tip platinum bullshit. the spark will always jump to the closest tip.
go get stock ngk spark plugs for your b18c1. it will say on the timing belt cover a model number. (the plastic cover, not valve cover)
fuel filter, fuel pressure, oil filter, oil pressure, valve adjustment, compression test.
all are things that need to be checked/replaced for routine maintance.
maybe the air filters clogged?
just give her a rundown from intake, through compression and combustion to exhaust. make sure there are no problems in the system.
good luck.
edit:sprelling and gammar.

hey YD this happened to my friends hatch as well, after checking everything we ended finding out that it was the secondarys not coming on at times cause the wiring kept coming out near the wiring-harness.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I've got some work to do.
I want to ditch that damn stock intake manifold anyways. Time for a Skunk2.

How about your cat. It may be getting clogged. Makes sure those big wires arent arcing either. Change the cap and rotor, try to use stock though. I would put new stock wires on too. Check all of your grounds. I wouldnt blame to 02 sensor, I didnt even have mine plugged in and my old car ran a high 13. Make sure that the wire boots arent causing the wires to make a good connection. Ive literally had to trim rubber off of the boots so i could get the wires to seat right. They werent msd though so, i am not sure...

MSD wires are pretty good though...Ive sold more than a few sets and never had a problem(even with my big *** hvc coil)...theyre also the only aftermarket wires that fit for ****.

I'd leave bosch plugs for European cars and NGK's for Japanese cars (And some american 4 cylinders too).

ok........replace the o2 sensor....if it has thrown a code or does it every once in a while...it is probably bad and when the o2 is not working correctly, your car can run really rich or lean, not to mention putting your car in limp mode!!!! before you do anything else besides checking your oil i would replace the o2!!!!!!! very important!!!
good luck!
