Need opinions...B20Z or B16 into 88HF?
Just looking for a few opinions here. Saw HXguys dyno and I'm now starting to think about the B20. Which swap would yeild the most streetable performance? I've never driven a B16 powered CRX, but I've heard complaints about the lack of torque. My 88HF comes in at jsut over 1800lbs, so I'm thinking torque may not be an issue...
But then I stop to consider that the B20Z looks like a torque monster. In an 1800lb car that should = some fun.
Basically, I want a swap that's easy, fun to drive and super streetable. This car will not be a trailer queen. Could see some NOS in the near furure and a custom turbo kit later on down the line.
Also, what tranny do you run with the B20?
Thanks,
ronb.

Damn! 1800 lbs?! I wish my car was that light! Id be running low low 14s maybe high 13s with a car that light.
Id go with the B20Z over the B16A especially if youre looking for fun street performance...cant beat the torque.
Run a GSR tranny with it also

Whoever said the B16 doesn't have torque is a little mistaken I think. my fornds B16a1 CRX has insane torque. Maybe it's just me, but his car pulls through the gears like nothing. Plus, he topends at 115 in 5th gear. The car just get's there insanely fast, and it's not even running right at the moment.
No Dyno charts to back up my mouth, but in my opinion, the b16 has plenty of torque.

B20 vtec. even more power, but if you do this it is wise to save up and get new pistons to raise the compression and strengthen the bottom end. Also an APEXi VAFC to engage the vtec cam lobe. I think the benefits to adding a B18c or a B16a(way cheaper) head are great. If you do it all while the motor is out you will save yourself lots of money than if you decide to do it later when you want more power. Good luck man, it will be a beast no matter what since the car is so light.

I definitely like the idea of a B20 VTEC... but you've got to consider that it's a lot of screwing around to go to all this trouble. In an 1800lb car, a B16A will absolutely fly. I own/drive one daily, and it feels just like you're driving a stock CRX below 4000 rpm, but from there on up it just takes off like nobody's business. B16A is definitely super streetable!
If you're willing & able to do the extra work though, then a B20 VTEC would definitely kick the B16A's ***! Myself, I like not screwing majorly with an engine's design .

Get the B16, I see them sell for less than $1500 all day. Whoever said get a GSR tranny is only suggesting that you do more work to convert Cable to Hydro tranny...
Get the B16 now, have a driveable car that should run well into the 14's, and if you are hungry for more power, build youself a decent LS or B20 block to replace the B16... I'd rather start with a motor that has a decent transmission, excellent head and rev-ability than a stock B20, which I'm sure you'll pay more for...

You can mate the b20 to a b16a cable tranny and not have to worry about any cable to hydro mods.
Besides, a b20z w/ a b16 tranny would be faster than an sir1 b16a(which is what you would get for $1500)

Go for the B16. If you want streetable performance and drivablity then thats the way to go. You can always add a turbo or NOS later on if you feel its not enough speed for ya'... but in a car that light you should have no problem running low to mid 14's all day. Get the P30 pistons to bump your compression and reprogramed ECU. Its fast when you push it.. and can still be your daily driver.
My brother has a 91' HB civic with a B16 and it runs 14.6 all day long with basic mods. He dogs the hell out of it and it runs great to this day! B20 is awsome, but unless you know how to build it...and put in a crap load of cash.. its really not worth the money for a daily driver. I have a LS/Vtec but to be honest its a gas drinking beast. Its fast as hell.. not too many all-motor cars that run 12's and can still be a daily driver. But its soon to be a weekend car... just cant afford to keep filling it up with gas running $2.39 a gallon here in the Bay Area. My next daily driver will either be a B18C or B16.
