Default NEED HELP! Buying Hybrid.......VTEC NOT Right???

My little brother is looking at a 98 civic hatch with a 96 GSR swap. I know the vtec in a GSR kicks in at 4400, well I drove it and it kicked on well after 5000. He told me it is a GSR ECU, and he has no vtec controller. I am thinking he maybe has an Si computer or something, I really have no clue.. Does anyone know what it could be????

The vtec kicked on after 5? Here's a couple things that you should know:
1. Gsr's have a dual stage vtec. Basically, it kicks it at 4400..but you only hear it when the secondary butterflies open up at about 5000.
2. An Si computer will kick the Vtec on later. I think around 5500 or so..but don't quote me.

If in fact the kid is running a b16 ecu, you can check by looking at the bar code on the unit it self. There should be some numbers below it. Either it's going to say P72 somewhere, or P30. P72 is the GSR designation, the latter is for an Si. That will help out alot.

The kid could have had the ecu reprogrammed also. That would bump the vtec crossover point to like 5700 in some cases. Take a drive again, and note where vtec kicks in.

The GSR's ECU turn the VTEC on, he was sayin that there is not an additional controller for the VTEC
how could a gsr ecu not have a v-tec controller?

Spade is right I was saying that he doesn't have like a fields or a VAFC or something.
And I know about the second runners on the gsr manifold, they come on at 5700. I am saying I didn't hear the click of VTEC at 4400 like it should be. At he said it was a stock GSR Ecu and not chipped or something. I think I am going to check to see if it is really a GSR ecu.

but you can't hear anything at 4400. I've never heard anything at that RPM.

I heard my V-Tech kick in at 4400 rpm's and 5700rpm's. It might be b/c of my intake. But i hear it kick in both times.

Jesus, you guys really need to get your facts straight before you post a reply here. There is no "dual stage vtec" 94+ GSR's have a dual stage intake manifold. VTEC activates at 4400 and the dual stage intake operates like this- when you hit 5800 rpm on a 94+ GSR a set of butterfiles closes the short (second) intake runners, allowing more flow during the higher RPM range.

You did, WOW!!, because Honda's don't have V-TECH, they have VTEC.

Geezus, when will you f'n kids learn what's in your car????

V-TECH = Cordless PHONE

VTEC = Honda variable cam timing

OH, and bQQsted hybrid has it right, there is not DUAL STAGE VTEC, so whatever you're hearing is not a TWIN VTEC system.

I have worked on many a gsr, you never hear the vtec come on but what hear is the secondary butterflies in the intake manifold open. So more then likely it is working correctly, so don't stress man. And as for not being able to hear it 4400 you can hear it switch but it is so quite and it is just a little click you will hear with your head out the window with no music on. SO like b18c-ej1 said now it before you post it.

you need an exhaust to hear the REAL vtec at 4400 rpm. and at 5800 the big runners on the dual stage intake opens. damn i hate the gsr's POS intake.

That's easy enough to check, the middle three digits in the OBDII GSR ECU is P72. The EX is P2P and a 99-00 Si won't plug in.
