Default LS/Vtec. what's the point?

I know in terms of price, it might work out to be a better deal, but what's the point? Is it really worth going through the trouble of finding a head, then a bottom end, then matting them together. I have nothing against this swap, I just don't see the point. Ls bottom ends are weak, rod ratio's prove that. You can't push them as hard as a Vtec motor. Why not just buy a Vtec swap?

I'm with you on this topic, the only time that i could see this as an option would be if somebody owned an ls integra and wanted more power. but to build one as an engine option (vs b18c1, or b16a,) it's pointless....imo

If you'e looking for torque, an H22 will do just fine. I'm glad to see others are with me on this point.

how is an h22 cheaper than ls/vtec. look at it this way, you buy a ls longblock, got mine for 300. then you buy b16 complete, 900. so for 1200 you have ls/vtec with a y1 or s1 tranny. tell me where you can find a h22 for that price and i'm interested. ls/vtec is simple, easy to come by, and fast as hell. i've beaten the same car with just ls non/vtec built head with stage 2 crowers, port and polish, springs,retainers... on my stock ls/vtec. also raced a crx with a gsr in san jose and beat him by about 2 cars. so, its just opinion and how its built. its cost efficient and effective.

I'm doing the LS/VTEC setup (most likely) because of how I can by everything over time. I'm getting a complete LS swap for my hatch. Then after that, start getting all the nessacry(sp) parts for the VTEC. Maybe come by a good deal on a VTEC head. Thats one reason for me. Good deal.

The point is I run 13.7@99 mph in a car weighing 2695 with me in it. Forgot to mention the car still has stock header, exhaust,tb, injectors, fuel pump, and im.........My motor revs to 9k with no problems. LS/VTEC rocks 2nd at Imstar in Super stock baby ........stock ls rods, type r pistons, skunk 2 valvetrain, and use arp bolts on head and rods......just my 2 cents

Two reasons...
They want to beat a type r
They can't afford the type r
Besides an Ls/vtec won't last that long anyway

Like I mentioned before, I have nothing against the swap. I was just hoping that those who have done it could give me some insight to how they like it. For now, I'll just stick with my H22.

I built my lsvtec because for one I was able to piece it together slowly and at my own pace. For two ls bottom end has a longer stroke which will create more torque and with the b16 head you get some top end power. I have had my lsvtec for about 2 years and I haven't had a problem with it. Dyno'd 207 to the wheels and I love every RPM it spins.

yeah but the rod/stroke ratio on a ls sucks.... i would have no arugments turboing a LS , but i wouldn't have the faith to rev it up to 8k if i had a headswap on it

i frequently took it to 8k and when at the track even 8300, the top end was amazing.

I've rev my ls/vtec up to 8500 daily with no problem..Stock rods with pr3 pistons and type R cams...I have a del sol s model and the whole ls/vtec swap with trans, and extra parts only cost me like $2000...I beat a 96 hatch with jdm type R at the track and that's good enough reason for me to do the ls/vtec swap..

He spent $5000(swap) and I only spent $2000.

god, i hate these posts, the newbs and the stupid rod ratio argument. Does anyone here know the rod ratio of the LS engine? 1.54:1 with a redline of 6800 rpm. You guys say the rod ratio sucks and so you can't rev it high, then what is the rod ratio for the gsr ? 1.58:1 with a redline of 8300 rpm. Sorry boys and girls, that is not a significant enough difference in rod ratio to justify the Ls engine not being able to rev that high. The LS engine can not rev high due to many other issues, not the rod ratio. Ls blocks are rev to 9000 all day long with the proper precations and a properly built engine. Do people change the rod ratio to make it rev to 9000? not often. Then how can people rev the ls engine with this horrible rod ratio to 9000? Because the rod ratio isn't the problem. The crank needs to be balanced, needs a block girdle, the head and many other components. Point is, stop blaming the rod ratio, and look at the other reasons why it won't rev high and fix them and enjoy a cheap and effective motor.

that's why my stupid noobie self would rather use a b16 with a almost perfect ratio at 1.74..... yes yes throw the arugement of not having torque, because yes i know i had a b16'd rex, and it was torqueless as ****, that's why i'm puttin a b18b in my cx

and silvercivic2k don't burn me too bad, i actually didn't know the ratio of a ls and gsr were that close, i might not even argue the whole ls/vtec idea now... thanks for the enlightenment

Why does everyone bash on LSVTEC? I bet better than half of you who say "oh it's ureliable" and "why dont you just get and h22" have never had LSVTEC and just get your information from stupid posts like this one. lsvtec is only thought of as unreliable because everyone that has it, builds it to race. Not everyone with a gsr or h22 romps on it revs up as much because virtually every lsvtec is built to race. And in most cases if you run your motor hard without taking precautions its going to blow. Everyone needs to stop bashing lsvtec, dont get pissed cause us who have them spent less money and are destroying your no traction-*** axle breaking h22's

how are ls/vtec with turbos, do they have oil problems..... im talkin about a stock ls bottom end and stock b16 head at about 10psi, will there be many problems?

Or you want something torquey, want the top end, but can't afford for all the custom mods to fit the damn prelude engine in your car!! Like my 90 Integra... That's why I'm going LS/VTEC.

Reliability is a very subjective, if a type r motor wasn't built properly then it's not going to last any longer than a LS/VTEC. But I do encourage building that motor up carefully, and don't cut corners... I think that way is going to save a lot of headache in the future.

I myself is in the process of building it right now, and let's jsut say it's NOT cheap at all! ARGH.....
