ls/vtec = horrible, horrible mistake... what's wrong?

My friend and i were getting onto the freeway and decided to test out his new car's power vs mine. He has a 94 integra with an ls/vtec and i have a 94 integra with LS motor. Now, before you start laughing about who's the better driver this was from a roll... he couldn't pull on me, in fact i pulled on him, just inch by inch... We shut down at 80 or so. We were wondering what the hell is wrong with his car... here's a little more info:

b18b Block
b18c1 head
AEM CAI
2.25" exhaust
DC 4-1 header
Chipped with removed rev limiter
CM stage 1 (kinda shitty)
relativly light 17s

My car:
b18b
AEM CAI
DC 4-1 Header
2.5" exhaust
2.5" Cat
MSD ignition (coil, SCI, wires)
Fidanza flywheel (7.5 lbs)
ACT XTSS clutch (rules)
Falken Azenis on slipstreams

What's the deal,
-Ryan

what transmission were each of you running? and well he may have to get the engine tuned..maybe his clutch is slipping so it doesn't fully engage when he shifts? also maybe your engine is a freak and is making power =P and tire/wheel size will make a difference in acceleration

Also, is he still running the stock LS Pistons, and he didnt upgrade to GSR or Type R. Just Curious because compression does play a factor as well.

um, is your friends VTEC working?

seems like it isnt...

what kind of ecu is he using and is vtec hooked up?

dont thinkt he vtec is hooked up. Once it is.. he should smoke you.

Re: ls/vtec = horrible, horrible mistake... what's wrong? (CRX_VTEC)

I hope if whoever took the time to do a ls/vtec would hook up the vtec.

Compression check? He may have a weak bottom end, bad rings?

Re: ls/vtec = horrible, horrible mistake... what's wrong? (nsxmatt)

well when it hits about 5200 rpm it screams. I was thinking that maybe that was the secondary intake runners? We are gonna take it to a local ls/vtec specialist and ask him what the thinks.

He has the stock ls pistons, and a pretty nice clutch, no slipping at all.

Thanks for you help guys.

ls/vtec isnt fast unless you upgrade the internal and transmission. gsr or type-r the ls transmission has longer gears http://rely.net/~htimages/smile/emthdown.gif http://rely.net/~htimages/smile/emthdown.gif

hm, well he is going to upgrade his clutch soon, while he's at it i'll tell him to throw in a gsr tranny. http://rely.net/~htimages/smile/emthup.gif

tell him to change the pistons too. some PR3, P30 would work wonders. http://rely.net/~htimages/smile/emsmile.gif

Man, LSVTEC Is shitty unless it's done right...and your friend isnt even close to doing it right. Shoulda just bought a GSR Swap.

Yea, stock internals with LS/Vtec isn't all that fast. In fact probably slower than just a GS-R swap with the same mods.

IS the vtec working correctly? when I had mine and vtec wasn't working I got killed by my friends ls by two cars. The motor was fully built also. In my experience a vtec head on a motor with the vtec not working is slower than a non-vtec.

What ECU is he running tho??? you said it opened up at 5200... If he's running a P72 you shouldn't be able to hear the secondaries like VTEC and the VTEC would kick much sooner.. My friend has a stock bottom end LSVTEC exactly the same as ur friends but it's in an EG.. It's not really fast but 13.4 isn't that bad... I still don't like stock bottom end LS/CRVTEC's they just won't make the power that one with pistons can.. I bet that tranny is killin him too... Fuck the LS shit... GSR will be fine but B16 or ITR will be even shorter.. Latez

Ah, one of the few people that actually realizes it's 'rpm', and not 'rpm's'...ha.

IF your secondaries are hooked up, you should hear them audibly by 6200rpm or so. Granted an LSVT on stock internals is not blazingly fast, but if VTEC is hooked up and working, he should have no problem against a modded LS, even with an LS tranny. LSVT's without vtec ARE slower than LS's.... they run different fuel maps... low end is not as good.

I've run another LS with my low CR LSVT setup (with my VTEC disengauged) and I was RIGHT there, but they kept inching on me every gear.

Re: ls/vtec = horrible, horrible mistake... what's wrong? (efzero.com)

Is there a way to test the vtec solenoid to see if it's working? I'm thinking the ECU might be incorrectly tuned etc. When he gets some money, i'll try and interest him in a mugen ecu or a jun ecu or a gsr tranny...

gsr trannys are currently going from 700 to 1000. I can't find anything cheaper than that. Also, since he pays for his gas he doesn't like the idea of cruisin at 80mph at 4000 rpm. Is it possibly to use a gsr 2nd and 3rd gear in an ls tranny?

Thanks,
Ryan

P.S. keep the thoughts and ideas comin, more ideas, the faster we can fix this! thanks guys.

ry tec! Suggest that RC sell his ls tranny when he buys a gsr tranny, thatll save him some money. Also tell him that i'll put gsr pistons in his block if he wants to. I told you to tell him NOT to buy that car... oh well, i wanna work on that car.

number one....you have lightweight flywheel and smaller rims and tires!!!

that will be the difference...

you said lightweight 17's.....ROFLMSAO
