LS 5th into GSR tranny
ok...i have a gsr obdI, gsr tranny. I dont like sustaining such a high rev driving at highway speeds. Can i just put a ls 5th gear in my gsr tranny or do i have to have the ls final drive and with that make my 1-4th gears longer? Thanks, i might have worded it and made it confusing, if you dont understand just ask.

I am looking into getting a hybrid tranny and yes you can use the ls 5th you do not need to switch the fd to make it work.

It's a little confusing but I get what your saying.
Yes, you can use an LS 5th, but you'll have to get the LS 5th main + counter gears in order for this to work. The 5th ratio is long enough that you won't need to swap over to the LS final drive. In fact swapping to an LS fd would be a bigger pain overall because it has a smaller diameter ring gear & differential than a GSR's ring gear. So you'd have to swap all that crap out as well.
So, 5th by itself will suffice in your GSR tranny.

Bingo... you will need the actual 5th gear that lies on the input/main shaft and its partner gear that belongs on the countershaft. No need for swapping final drives. I kinda find it funny that you don't even like the GSR 5th... good thing you don't have B16 or ITR tranny... LOL. That LS 5th is LOOOOONNNNGGGGGG.

Its a pretty easy swap if you've opened a honda tranny before. I just did it on my b16 tranny and my rpm's dropped from 4000rpm at 70mph to about 3300rpm(also depends on what size tires you have-i have 40series 16's). It wont drop that much on a GSR, but it will still drop about 350rpm's lower. You also gotta remember that the GSR final drive is 4.4 compared to the ls 4.2, which means that you will not cruise at the same low rpm as a LS. A stock ls tranny runs 3500rpm's at 80mph. My old gsr tranny with the LS 5th gear ran about 3650rpm's at 80 mph. Before that, my GSR tranny would cruise at about 4100rpm at 80mph. Like i said, also depends on what size wheels and tires you have. Your rpm's might be a little lower or higher.
