Default Lightest H/B body?

Hybrid guys, which is the lightest hatch body you can find?
Should I look among the 5th gen. civics? Like '92-'95 models?

Thanks!

I'd guess the 85 Civic Hatch would be the lightest, but it's probably not the best candidate for a swap.

but they look sweet! ... ive seen a 86 HB with a nice swap... boy that car was sweet... people look at it and are like WTF but it BONESS the hell out...

but if i had money to build a JDM car it would be an 86 HB RHD etc.etc.etc..

it depends on what you are planning on doing. if you are taking everything out of the car except for the seat, stearing, engine and frame, then all the hatches are going to be relatively the same weight. i can't see any of them being more than a hundred pounds or so different. right? but if you are looking for something to keep stock looking, then don't get an si version. the sunroofs add 50 or so pounds and the ac crap adds weight too.

IF you're talking about the 5th-gen stuff 1992-1993 CX and VX hatches are your best bet. They only have one airbag and less tar. The CX and VX bodies are probably about identical in terms of weight, but the VX is rated at less weight because they have those light-*** alloys rather than the CX steelies.

Like in my 1992 CX, there was only 2 little pieces of tar - one on each floorboard. Where as the DX and Si has more tar - even has it in the spare tire area.

The 1986 style Civic hatch and CRX are probably the lightest ones that have bolt-in kits available for the B-series motors.

The 1988 CRX HF is an awesome lightweight as well, and so are the 1988-1989 Civc and CRX base models like the STD model hatch and the HF CRX. The 1990-1991 cars had thos eheavy-*** seatbelt mechs in the doors and more tar too.

Hope that helps a bit

I knoiw the 1988 HF is probably the lightest Honda to work with from 1988-up, but I don't know about 1800lbs. I wish someone would weigh one on a real scale.

The 1988 CRXs used a stamped rear suspension that was lighter than the cast pieces from 1989-1991, so the 1988 CRX is the lightest CRX to get, and the HF is the lightest CRX. You would not believe the heavy amounts of tar in the DX and Si models - more than any hatch I've seen.

Oh, and here's thread I started a while back about listing curb weights:
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=107556&page=1

I don't know why you can't reply to it - it never got locked...

Anyways that thread has a lot of real world weights on it - even with swaps and whatnot, so it should give you a good idea of what kind of weights your cars could get to.

My 89 Civic Hatchback Std. weighed 1815 lbs. without me. It was completely gutted with just a racing seat and dash on the inside. It didn't have the front bumper support. I had a bullfrog hood on it with hx rims all around. Oh yeah and a 1/4 tank of gas. With a D16Z6, so the motor weighs close to the stock one.

I think the 88 hf did weigh just over 1800.

Here's some real-world data for you:

My 1992 Civic Si HB with B18C5 weighed 2289lbs. full interior and Rota 15inch wheels. The whells weigh 12lbs. a piece.

My pal's 1992 VX with the B18C1 and the same Rota wheels weighed in at 2080.

Both cars had stock manifolds - no headers, and they even both had AEM intakes and the same Tanabe Exhausts. Same amount of gas too. Same suspension too. Pretty much the same damn cars but slightly different motors (weight should be the same).

So the difference in real world terms on the same scale is 209lbs. That makes a big difference in everything - acceleration, braking, cornering - all the important elements of the car.

So, I sold that car and got a CX. I kept my wheels, engine, seats, etc. to go into my 1992 CX that I bought. 200lbs. less to haul around will feel much better, and if I want to drive an Si I'll sport my fiancee's 1992 Si hatch with B16A2

Weight is a big deal because you don't have to spend as much money to go as fast as the next guy in his heavier car. Does this mean I'll run around with no bumper supports and side impact beams? Hell no, but I will take a CX or VX any day over the Si.
