I'm looking into motors and would like some helpful tips
So i'm shopping for a motor and i would like some helpful tips to see if a motor is in good condition. For example: check plugs, cam lobes, etc. Thanks

compression test is very important
edit: i don't think cam lobes is a normal checkoff, but why not. heh
most people probably are going to clean up the engine they're trying to sell, so it might have brand new spark plugs and wires, etc... so it's hard to necessarily say from that.

i would just be sure you are buying from a trustworthy seller.. be sure u get a startup warranty at least.. check him out.. ask about him, can u find people he's dealt with before, does anyone vouch for him.. things of that nature..
as for the motor...
check to see if it has any noticeable leaks, cracks, any missing sensors, what all does it come with? is it complete?
intake manifold, exhaust manifold, head, block, tranny,.. the obvious.. then check for things like does it have the wiring harness on there, the alternator, power steering pump, ac compressor, belts, axles, shift linkage, ecu, are the injectors in there...?...
if the motor is clean, it may be in good shape, or that might mean he just cleaned it up.. maybe he's trying to hide leaks, maybe he just takes care of his products... you never know... dont judge it just by the looks.. ya know?
im just throwing alot of things out there off the top of my head... hope that helped.
oh ya, if possible, take someone with you that u trust and that knows what they are looking at.
