There's a couple different ways. The best way is on the front of the engine block should be a number pressed onto the engine saying the year it was made, the last 2 digits (93) for example. Obd1 vtec engines have vtec pressure valve whereas obd2 vtec motors don't. Obd2 motors also have extra sensors, like secondary o2 sensor.

All US VTEC motors have the Vtec pressure switch. It's some euro and jdm motors that don't have it.

That is a flucuation sensor on the crank.
The sensor that the ECU uses for crank position is still in the dizzy.

My bad i realised that after I posted When i remembered you can use a obd2 distributor fine w/ obd1
