how do you know if vtec kicks in
just swapped in a b16a into my 92 cx hb and the thing is slow as hell. slower than stock 92-95 si's. ****! i'm running i/h/e chipped p28 clutch and everything. i know another problem is that i'm running a LS trans but would just that fact alone make me that ridiculously slow. i'm thinkin my vtec isn't kickin in cuz it doesn't scream or i don't feel a kick.

do you have a vtec light?
LOL
you should be throwing a code and Check Engine Light if vtec isnt working....
and you should hear vtec easily.
an LS tranny will indeed slow you down but not that badly...
is your timing belt set correctly?
is your timig correct/tuned?
is your catalytic converter plugged?
is your fuel pressure fugged up?
is your fuelpump okay?
is your parking brake still on? (LOL)
did you add engine oil twice thus having 6 qts in the motor? (ask me how I know )
are you rollin' on 18", chrome, 25 pound wheels?
oh yeah, I forgot to say- check your injectors!!! maybe just remove them and clean them... they may be clogged if the motor sat around for a while!
thats it for my Q's.

when i first droped my b16a it was kinda slugish, maybe you need to drive it a couple hundred miles (break-in). you dont know how long that motor's been sitting.
VTEC on a b16a is loud, you should be able to hear it.

Just throw a light, such as a turn signal or some kinda bulb on to the vtec wire to the cellinoid (?) (upper left corner of head) and rev it to see if the its getting power if it is and its still not hitting the oil (vtec) channel in the block might be clogged (its been known to happen) if this is the case when you tare the head apart spray pb blaster or somthin down it to see if it comes out the other side if not blow it out with an air gun or anything that blows air that should get you started i would do the light test first

when i first put my vtec head on mine wasnt kicking in cause the throttle cable wasnt pulling the TB open all the way. pedal to the floor was only 3/4 throttle. there is a little rubber stop way up on the gas pedal by the fire wall inside the car. screw it out some and you will have less slack in the throttle cable so it will be open all the way when you floor the pedal. totally different engine but maybe same problem...

If you have an oil pressure gauge you will see the pressure momentarily drop about 15 PSI the instant the VTEC solenoid clicks. You can also wire in a light that shows when the ECU sends the VTEC activation signal. The oil gauge is proof positive that it's engaging though and can help diagnose a bad solenoid.

i think you'll be better off w/ a si or gsr tranny. the ls has longer gear; that's probably why it's pulling slower than a typical b16a+it's tranny.
