How do I build a reliable B20-VTEC?
Not necessarily "build" like as in new pistons and all that but, rather just putting it together.
I'm just looking to buy a B20 block, and get a B16 head and tranny. Are there any special procedures I'd have to do to put this together or anything? maybe like running oil lines or something along that line?
Also, I originally wanted to put a H22 in my 98 civic coupe, but people are telling me that the B20 VTEC would be quicker and more reliable. My thinking is that the H22 would be more reliable only because the fact that it was made by Honda, not peiced together my myself.
I know theres probably another topic that would have answered at least part of my question, but I searched and there are about a billion B20 questions.
If you had any sites that specialize in B20 Vtecs please post.
Thanks alot guys.

I'd like to add http://www.b20vtec.com to the list of sites.

I think a H22 would be more reliable because it was put together by Honda, also you would be bolting in 195 hp right off the bat, you would need to build b20vtec to get to 195. I am building a b20vtec and it is a pain in the butt. There are all sorts of things I am running into that need to be figured out, ie. clearences and pcv crap, and it is costing a lot of money. If I had to do it all over again, I would put in a motor that is already together. Just my thoughts.

The H22 is heavier than a b20 though. If you want reliablility from a b series you can also consider a Type R engine. Also b20's are reliable if built correctly.

the H22 appears to be quite a bit heavier than a B20. So while you *might* get more hp potential, you'll always be carrying around at least an extra 80 pounds exactly where you don't want it: on the front of the car.
As for reliability, I've seen too many hybrids running flawlessly at one track event after another for this to be a concern for me. Seriously, I know one guy who has 20+ events on his and all he's done is change the oil. It's now a race car in the ECHC (www.honda-challenge.com), and he won his first 2 races last weekend. With a full interior. And a working radio.
The ones that have the most problems at the track are far more likely to be turbo/supercharged.
Matt, who hopes to build a b20vtec for H1 competition in the next year...

The best overall thing to do would problably go with gsr motor and build from there. Type R would be awesome but they are just too expensive right now. I know the H22 is much heavier than any b series, but I think that a couple would be able to handle it better than than hatches.

I'd rather go crvtec than h22. If you wanna leave a motor stock...go with an h22. But if you want to modify it down the road...b series is the way to go imo.

Re: How do I build a reliable B20-VTEC? (RK)
Alright so , H22 is outof the question now, I'm thinking either the B20Vtec or just a GSR, I want reliablity, BUT I want TORQUE, to pull my heavyass EX coupe without having to ring the engines neck.
Also I hear that I SHOULD replace the rods in the B20 block if I put the vtec head on. would I be spending alot of $$$ to build a reliable B20 Vtec motor? I dn't want to spend too too much, I just want something with a good amount of torque that won't end up leaving me broke.

Building a crvtec to be reliable and have a good amount of torque will cost $$$$$$ especially if you're having a builder do it for u. How fast do u want ur car to be?

I wanna run LOW 14's
I Really just want a basically stock motor, maybe some cams....I'm more concerned with my suspension, since I'm more of a handling junkie than a power guy.

you can slap a b16 head on a b20 block with very little modification and make 170~whp.
drill for dowel pins in the b16 head, run an oil return line and bam. fast honda.

a CRVTEC will laugh at your low 14's and chew it up and spit it out.....ive seen an article with a mild crvtec setup running 13.5's.....im not sure if they had full interior or not, but you gut it and put all the necessary bolt ons on there and you have yourself a low 13 second car.....go turbo and its story over for anyone who wants to challenge you....
