H22a late vtec?
1990 accord coupe jdm h22a, Alright so ive been fighting with this car over the last 3 months trying to get everything to work right. For about the last 3weeks I havnt been able to get vtec to kick in, I wanna say it was but just really quiet and weak, no cel codes besides my Vss which I thought didnt have anything to do with the vtec engagment? Guess I was wrong because put in a vss and now vtec is working again, but my speeddo still isnt working for some reason but the code is gone so im gna chock that up as the gauge itself being faulty.
Before when vtec wasnt working the rev limiter would kick on at 8500rpm(gauge only goes to 8k but it would go right past and hit it) now that vtec IS working according to the gauge vtec fully kicks on at 6-6200k? I say fully because you can kind of hear it at 5500, its almost like a 2stage vtec is the best way I can describe it and also I only did this once cause I dont want to over rev the thing but the tach went way past 8K ima say closer to 9k and didnt hit the limiter like it wasnt there maybe or maybe the tach is just off and vtec is kicking in at 5500 and its just reading wrong.idk, also when I took it that far trying to find the rev limiter the battery light started flashing really fast?
So pretty much what causes a late vtec engagment? and or can a tach be off a little? maybe ignitor or the dizzy itself?
And what causes a flashing battery light at high rpms? allternator and battery test out fine and belt is tight
any suggestions would be appreciated

Re: H22a late vtec?
okay took the car out again, i hate doing it but I free reved it to limiter in nuetral and it bounced at the proper 8500k but when driving there is definetely no limiter its just keeps pulling and vtec doesnt kick on tilll the 6200k redline? so im gonna guess maybe the p13 is biting the dust?

alright well I just realized that the 120mph speed limiter it use to have also isnt there so that plus the no rev limiter im gonna go ahead and chalk it up as the ecu so I guess its time for a p28 and a good tune

A bad VSS means no VTEC, unless you have Neptune or S300 and have the minimum speed for VTEC set to zero. More than likely you're only hearing the IAB's opening, which is more noticeable than VTEC and is set to happen around 5500rpm.
BTW unless it has some impressive aftermarket camshafts in it, your H22A is peaking around 7000-7200 rpm. Spinning past 8k is just putting extra wear on your engine.

Re: H22a late vtec?
In the OP I stated I fixed the VSS and thats what brought vtec back, code 17 vss is gone. I have the iabs deleted I know what vtec feels and sounds like but thanks for the suggestion though. Yeah peak power numbers are in the 7s even with my built head I dont beat on my car much but I would like there to be a rev limiter in case of a misshift in to neutral.
Just 3weeks ago Vtec would kick in right at 5500 and the rev limiter would cut at a little past 8k, factory p13 settings, now vtec hits at 6200ish and theres no revlimter???? Could it be the distributor giving the wrong signal to the ecu or the ecu itself?
