H22, JDM GSR, or Type R. wich one??
ok heres the deal......
my buddy can find a Typer R engine for 4250
he can get a JDM hGSR for about 3300
o rhe can get a H22 combo for about 2500
he wants to know wich will be better. he has a 98 Civic Coupe EX automatic....
hes really thinking of getting the GSR , but the H22 its tempting.. he doesnt care about understeer, bc thats not really an issue.... the Type R its tempting but its too of a mystery when asking the seller for information about it...(dont even know the VIN or Type R production number on it)....
he wants to know what does he needs for the H22 swap and for the other ones.... he knows he needs a shift linkage and ecu and add about 4 wires... but what else he needs for each individual swap.... any info will be helpful . what will be ur choice personally? thanxs

Re: H22, JDM GSR, or Type R. wich one?? (JDM EF9)
I think you friend needs to ask himself a few basic ?'s. I can give some scenarios were 1 engine my be more desireable then another:
1) For ease of swapability (Probably not a word) the motors you have choosen would go in this order: JDM ITR/ JDM GSR, then H22a
2) For speed (Initally anyway, and remember this just my opinion. So no one jump down my throat): JDM ITR (Depending on the year), H22a, JDM GSR
3) For N/A engine build-up: JDM ITR, JDM GSR, H22a
4) For forced induction: H22A, JDM GSR, JDM ITR ( The reason why is because both the ITR and GSR have higher compression. Now if your friend is willing to spend the money to get it tuned by someone who knows what they are doing then it really doesn't matter
5) Cost wise you broke that down already
6) Drag Racing: H22A, JDM ITR/GSR
7) Auto-Xing or Track Racing: JDM ITR (Factory LSD), JDM GSR (Less weight), H22a
I can't think of any other scenarios were one engine outshines the other right now but those are probably the main ones.
My opinion, Go with the ITR if he intends to stay NA or the GSr if intends to go Boost. I'd stay away from a H22a swap because its not a direct bolt in.

Re: H22, JDM GSR, or Type R. wich one?? (Apex i ITR)
one more thing to think about....i can get an h22, brand new clutch/flywheel, water pump, timing belt, oil pump...all the items that can be replaced while the engine is out, new radiator, axles, mount kit, and all the other crap to get the swap COMPLETELY and correctly done for about $100 more than JUST an ITR motor costs. oh, and that's with the a/c rehooked up with a custom mount

Still the swap itself isn't straightforward. Although that does sound like a great deal. Your friend needs to decide what he wants to do then you can craft.
