h22 (h2b) temp gauge issues.
Have had some issues with my h2b. This forum has some very knowleagable individuals. I also trust everyones opinions here, that is why Im posting here instead of other forums.
Alright so im driving my car for about 10 minutes last night, look down and the temp is as high as it can go. Get out, let the car cool for about 10 minutes (popped hood, engine didnt seem different, and radiator cap was not hot at all. Drive for 5 minutes and temp is back up. Pullover let cool and drive for another 5. Almost home and the temp needle is all the way up. Decide to speed up because im really close to home. Once i gave it gas, the needle dropped to normal operating temperature.
So what should I do here? Im thinking my coolant levels have dropped and/or i have air in my lines. Im not able to work on the car until thursday, so Im trying to gather as much prelimianry info as possible. Im gonna drain, flush, and re-fill the coolant system, test my thermostat in boiling water, and check all grounds and temperature connections.. Anyone else have some ideas? Im hoping it is something simple that is going on.

sounds like maybe the thermostat is getting stuck closed/open.
Maybe its getting stuck closed- hence why the car got hot. then when you got on it , it forced itself open and cooled it down.

thats what im really thinking. i dont think its major, knock on wood... what would cause the thermostat to get stuck closed or open? i replaced it 5 months ago. could the smaller d series radiator play a part in this?

If you didn't replace the thermostat when you did the swap I would suggest changing it anyways. It's not an expensive part and its pretty cheap piece of mind.
Change the thermostat and then bleed the coolant. See what it does after that.

werd, and get a fail safe thermo if it fails it will stay in the open position instead of closed

Auto Zone I know sells them, but yea definately get all the air out.

im gonna give autozone a call to see if i can pick up a fail safe thermo.
alright well looks like i fix the problem. drain, replaced thermostat, re filled, and bleed the coolant system. however, she still likes to idle at or a little above 1000rpm at times.

honestly just get a oem one. i have tried napa and it didn't even work when it was brand new

Yeah, I agree. I'm running an Advanced Auto Parts thermostat right now and it fits like crap. The OEM one is always worth the money.
