Default H22/Civic Dyno Results - 185 whp

We (www.rndauto.com) recently swapped a H22 into a 93 Civic for a customer (GAccord). We replaced the oil pump, water pump, thermostat, etc with OEM Honda parts, did the manual timing belt tensioner conversion, and installed the exhaust, VAFC II, LSD, clutch, flywheel, and several other aftermarket performance parts (see list below). After doing the swap we encountered several wiring issues within the HCP harness conversion. To add to our troubles, the ECU that came with the swap was chipped and not running correctly. We had a spare H23 P14 ECU and decided to try that on the dyno. We went to the dyno earlier tonight and tuned the car with the VAFC II. The engine turned out to put down some great numbers for the mods done. Note the H23 P14 rev limiter cam on around 6800 rpm. With the rev limiter raised or using a good H22 P13 ECU, we believe this motor could easily make more power.

The Setup:

1993 Honda Civic VX
1992 JDM Honda H22A Engine
Greddy 4-2-1 Header
OEM Integra Type-R Intake
APEXi V-AFC II
AEM Fuel Rail
B&M Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator
NGK Spark Plug Wires
Bosch Platinum Plugs
Walbro Fuel Pump
Invidia Exhaust
ACT Pro-Lite Flywheel
Exedy Clutch
Quaife LSD
Hasport Mount Kit & Axles

The Results:

Wow, 185whp at 6800 rpm, awesome. You'll definitely hit 190+ with the rev limiter fixed.

I'm happy with the results. Mike's been great with communication especially since were 3 hours away from each other. Its not like I can just swing by the shop or anything. Great customer service, and superb workmanship!

Look for more power with a built head later this year, care of rndauto of course!

Yes, the P14 ECU is running the car and the VAFC II is controlling the VTEC like it would with any ECU. We had to take out fuel with the P14 ECU as it was running VERY rich. Fuel correction ranged from -20% down low to -7% up top. The P14 should run the car just fine. He could raise the rev limiter or get a P13 and re-dyno tune.

Tom - We are looking forward to making this engine really put down some crazy numbers.

Correction - The harness was done by HCP, not Hasport.

What? The VAFC can't control the rev limiter. Rpms drops 200?

Hmmm..... i definently think rev limit is really hurting ya. Nice numbers for a 6800 cap though, heh.

I'd say the most it will make power to on the stock cams is going to be 7000, so he's not losing that much.

Hmm, im pretty sure the h22 makes power up to 7200 (could be wrong though). But i think he would be better off with either a p13 or a chipped p28 based on the numbers he put down and the mods he has done. I have basically the same setup, minus the header, and i put down 180whp (and i know a header should increase hp by a touch more then 5, lol). Now, of course i know not every motor is the same and yadda yadda yadda, but I think the biggest difference is our ECU's. Im using a chipped p28 runnin chrome and we started with a base map off of a mildly modded h22a (and tuned from there).

Now im not pretending to be a master on p14 (h23) fuel maps but I think, judging from the results, that the maps are different enough to warrant a change.

But, im not trying to argue what was put down and im also not trying to bash the guys setup, I just personally would recommend doing that p13 or chipped p28. for a great lookin swap though and again, nice numbers.

Damn man, 11.8 CR? You don't have any i/h/e listed. That may be why you were only in the 180s.

I agree if he wanted the most power to go with a P13. We did what we could at the time. The P13 he had was junk and we had an extra P14 laying there. The fuel should be ok as we tuned it with the V-AFC. The timing tables are the only issue. He's going to go with Hondata when he upgrades the head.

I think most would be supprised that some of those headers (DC, Greddy, etc) don't actually gain much more over the stock JDM one. Anyone have any links to back to back comparissons on a H22?

You have higher compression which could change the way the cams make power slightly, but you still made peak power at around 6900-7000 and then it stayed the same for another 200 rpm and started to drop off. That spike is from the rev limiter. I'm just saying for a H22 with intake, header, exhaust the power will more than likely peak at 6800-7000 rpm. It might stay at the same hp level for another 200 rpm though like yours did.

Funny you said this, we did a comparison with a DC (had one laying around the shop) and my stock jdm h22 header, and I'll be damned if the stock jdm header ports were the same size as the dc and the design was almost identical. We thought about doing a couple dyno pulls with each header, but decided against it after seeing how closely they resembled each other. We figured the numbers would be roughly the same and wouldnt be worth tieing down the civic and runnin it up.
