Going B20 Vtec soon... A couple questions
Hey guys,
I am planning on converting my B20 to VTEC in the coming months and have some questions.
1. I am driving a 2000 Si and am currently using a Phearable ECU for my B20. I still have the stock ECU for the Si, so I was wondering if I could use that when I go VTEC or do I have to either re-chip the Phearable or get an S300?
2. Should I get rod bolts, and if so, what kind should I get?
3. Anything else I should know?
Thanks!
Matt

I'm getting a B16 head with brand new valves, ARP head studs, and an Inline Pro VTEC Conversion kit, btw.

You can use the OEM SI ecu, P30, P28 ecu's. But its always better to be able to tune your set up. Now if you can afford to do so then I would look into getting S300 or Flash Pro. nothing wrong with having your motor dialed in.

I'm pretty sure mine is also obd2 to obd1 because I'm throwing a CEL and was not able to use a scanner, had to do it the old fashioned way, with a paperclip and CEL Flash codes... Code 14... I have a IACV on the way, praying its not a bad ECM..

If the motor has been messed with or apart and its not virgin, I would go with the arp rod bolts. My b20zVtec, stock internals untouched is making 200whp and my rev limit is set at 8400rpm with no issues. Just take care of your engine, I use brad penn oil and honda oem oil filters and i dont let the oil get dark. Get a S300 and get it tuned after you put it together, you will benefit more from that than gambling on stock and chip ecu's

Mine is a JDM B20B that I picked up from an Import shop in Northern Virginia. As far as I know it is untouched internally. I'm hoping to make 200whp minimum but I'd like to see how much it'll make if I can get more

You are about to open Pandoras box with that statement. These conversions are not exactly as simple as bolting on a head. ie.
1. crankcase breather modification
2. waterpump swap (22 tooth VTECH type with correct timing belt)
3. wiring the VTECH, oil pressure sensor (USA models only) and knock sensor. not only to the motor but to the ECU with proper sockets pins.
4. MANY of these head gaskets leak oil (VTECH or B20) the ports just don't line up perfectly for drainback. Modify the head with a B20 gasket to save$$$. There are two drain returns that need to be plugged and redrilled for a PERFECT seal, ask the machinist to do it.
5.Don't rev (stock bottom) over 8500rpm no matter what anyone else is doing; they are wreckless, blessed or PERFECTLY tuned motors without a trace of detonation.
6. Don't touch the bottom end unless you plan on putting new rods in; and be ready for the debate when you want to know what bearings to use.
7. Factory VTECH manifolds are awesome, don't bother with the racing stuff untill you build for it. 4-8HP on the top (8500+ RPM) is not worth your time and hardly noticable.
8. It is possible to contact pistons with valves as they are a bit bigger with the VTECH head, though MANY people have not. Set the cams straight up and leave them there or you might just find out for yourself.
9.Google B20/VTECH for anything you want to know for DIRECT links back to here or the B20/VTECH forum; everything you may need to know is here, just easier to find that way.
10. Plan on spending way more than you think to do it. It's worth it though.
Good luck.
