Default Failed REF....what do you guys think?

UPDATED: 2/3/06

made a trip to visit my local state ref for my h22 in my hatch. new spark plugs, cleaned the egr, changed oil, and ran it hard before i got there. on the first visit, only problem was, the ref was late and the car sat for an hour in the morning until it got put on the sniffer. when they started it up, lots of steam was coming out of my exhaust.

Between the first and second test, i changed my cat (looked a little worn out) and my o2 sensor (was a cheap bosch one....now a denso one).here were my readings:

First Readings were from 1/26
Second Readings were from 1/31
15 mph Test: FAILED (GROSS POLLUTER) ; FAILED
%C02: Measured: 14.4 ; 15.1
%o2: Measured: 0.3 ; 0.0
HC: Max: 128 Measured: 184 ; 96
CO: Max .80 Measured: .67 ; .25
NOX: Max: 867 Measured: 2786 ; 1137

25 mph Test: PASSED ; PASSED
%C02: Measured: 15.1 ; 14.9
%o2: Measured: 0.0 ; 0.0
HC: Max: 103 Measured: 102 ; 74
CO: Max .68 Measured: .31 ; .19
NOX: Max: 768 Measured: 477 ; 244

I've searched a lot, and i know NOX is caused by high temperatures. And I know carbon build up can cause high temperatures. Do you think a cooler thermostat and fanswitch would help me out? Right now, my fan is hooked up directly to a switch on my dash and i wasn't allowed to run it (also, got written up for that). So I have to hook it up properly now. I've read about seafoam countless times, but am a little scared about doing that cuz some people say it can mess things up. What about TB cleaner like b-12 or gumout or something like that? Thanks guys.

try running the lowest possible octain fuel with out knock, don;t rod on it when the pore gas is in there(it burns faster) do you have any kind of tunnablyity on the car, if you do you can try and lean it out more burns hotter and warm up the cat faster. Just my .02 any one correct me if i am wrong

not able to tune it or lean it out. forgot to mention, running walbro 190 fuel pump. think putting a stock civic fuel pump will make any difference?

I dont think so... that would only matter if your fuel pressure is bumped up. but as long as you are not running rich, that should not be a problem... check your spark plugs, see if you are running rich or lean or right on target, then we can go from there

nox is a measure of cylinder tempratures. one THAT HIGH suggests some kind of misfire under a light load.

when you are failing nox and HC you should try to fix the HC failure first. check ignition components. timing, plug gap, cap, rotor, plug wires. check for a vacuum leak, when was the last time you replaced your fuel filter?

the cat and/or o2 sensor is not an emissions cure all. its important to diagnose before you replace parts.

its possible the cat/engine was just cold but it never hurts to double check everything before you go back.

that's your problem right there. swap that slow h22 motor out and put a real engine.
maybe like a d16y7 block, d16a6 intake manifold and a stock crx hf tranny.

I just passed DEQ using this stuff called "guaranteed to pass". You should be able to get it at any auto parts store. First time I ran I failed HC's. I ran a 2.76 and passing was 1.20. I used the guaranteed to pass, changed my spark plugs, and got a new cat, and ran a .23

It might have been the plugs and cat but I dunno. That stuff is like 10 bucks.. it's worth a shot.

Also I passed using premium... I see posts saying to use the lowest octane and posts saying to run the highest.. I wish you guys would make up your minds.
