F20B vs H22A
 

Hey honda tech fam.. So my D16 in the EG is toasted and now in looking into doing a F20 swap or a H22.. I've been told that they are basicly the same motor but the F20 is better due to more torque?? The F swap is about $500 cheap then H as well... I need help in making this decision so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated..

More torque? An f20 is a 2 liter engine. I would not even bother with an f20. Unless your buying from a dealer such as hmotors you can usually pickup h22's for $500 bucks. Your probably thinking about the h23a vtec motor.

There's no contest. The H22 is superior. More displacement, bigger valves, more after market support etc..

Ask yourself whether or not you are going to be doing the internals on your swap at some point. Because the fact is, from my experiences with both engines built and stock, the H22 internal parts are much easier and cheaper to source than the F20B. Spin some bearings or even destroy a crank? Good luck finding an F20B crank, though it is possible but certainly not cheap. Even certain simple parts, like a head gasket, can be found quickly for the H, and harder to find for the F20B, even then it will cost more.

Certain aftermarket parts such as cams, headers, intake manifold will fit but in the torque department there just isn't a fair comparison: the H22 will win. Granted an F20B manual (with the larger TB and Type S cams) has a better top end, but you cant beat the displacement of the H22. Unless you spring for the H23 VTEC like deucedeuceEK said.

im about to do this conversion when i get back in the states (Deployed) and i was reading some forums about this and some people was saying that some H22 parts can fit F20B

Yes they can. Not all parts but some.

Cams and valvetrain (except the valves, I know the intake valves are smaller in the F20B 34mm vs 35mm), crankshafts (only with 55mm mains), header, cylinder head (check P2V clearance), cam gears, intake manifolds, TBs, distributors, timing components, and valve covers all can be interchanged. There may be more but I haven't touched either motor in over 2 years

What does not interchange would be the pistons and rods as the H22 has 87mm and the F20B uses 85mm. Rods are longer in the F20B due to the 88mm stroke. Somewhere in the F20B FAQ states you cannot swap the oil pans (maybe if you swapped pick-ups too perhaps). Its early in that thread and I believe the carnage caused by using the H22 oil pan on the F20B is still there.**

**Correction: I cannot find the thread with the damage done by swapping oil pans, but I am sure I can find it if you really needed it. But as I said though not 100% sure, if you swapped the oil pickup (using an H22 pickup with and H22 oil pan) I am sure you could use it.

H23Vtec>H22>F20B. Displacement reigns in NA form.

Likely most turn to the F20B because of the cheaper initial sales tag, but the extra couple hundred you spend to get the displacement (mo powa) cannot be achieved for the cost. In the end if you are looking to build past a stock setup you'll just be kicking yourself in the but for not starting off big.
