EG + B18C = 5th gear grind?
so far i've had my swap for about a month now, the car runs great and i really haven't had a problems except for a 5th gear grind.
i babied it for 1000 miles and then changed the oil to full synthetic, adjusted the valves and checked for loose bolts. i thought this would be the best way to 'break in' an 8 year old used engine.
i've finally been able to take it up to 8k and i keep noticing a slight 'grind' going into 5th gear. it will only grind if i'm getting on it. normal driving, it seems fine. no matter how slow i shift into 5th, when the revs are up, i get that slight grind.
i guess this could be normal? i read in another post on H-T that this can be expected. i wanted to see if you guys knew anything about it.
btw... i have a factory LSD, but i doubt that has anything to do with it.
TIA

I assume you have an 8 year old tranny too? this being the case, there may not be much you can do. Ive had problems with fifth gear on two of my hondas in the past. Honda makes their own transmissions, and they arent the best at it.
this is, of course, worst case scenario. so no other gears grind?

It Lives!
So its running good. Wouldn't have a clue about the 5th gear problem.
Is it quick? Still haven't dropped mine in but hopefully next weekend. Mostly had to wait on parts but I hope thats all done now.
Did you change your fuel pump? Read a post from Tom that it aint a bad idea but thats something I didn't pick-up.
Post some pics of the install...

you mean you haven't done the swap yet!?!? you need to
get that bad boy in there.
the car is so much quicker then it used to be. i
don't think the old Z6 could hold a candle to the
B18C. things i love about the swap so far is how the
car drives like the engine should have came in the car
in the first place and how it will slam you
back in the seat after every shift.
and don't forget the sound of the secondaries opening.

belts, new plugs and wires and i think that's it.
next thing i want to buy is either a GSR radiator or a
Fluidyne radiator... the engine runs a little hot...
almost at the half way mark on the temperature gauge.
when the weather starts to be like 80 - 90 degrees
everyday, i don't think the SOHC radiator is going to
cut it.

disposable camera. once i get them developed and if
they came out alright, i'll post em up.

Which fuel pump did you go with? I am going to keep the a/c so I need to figure out what radiator will work with all that.
...Yeah I know its killing me that I haven't dropped it in yet but better to get everything lined up first. This baby better get it on after all the cost lol.
Congrats again

for the fuel pump and water pump, i replaced them with OEM parts. a buddy of mine races autocrosses and track events regularly and swears by Honda parts. he's also a very good mechanic, so i trusted his word.
i've seen hybrid guys use direct replacement SOHC Fluidyne radiators with their B series engines and keep their a/c. the GSR radiator is twice as wide as the stock SOHC one, so i'm not sure if you can keep the a/c if you go that route.
my buddy took a few pics of my car for me... here's what it looks like now.
expensive... but i think it was worth it. it's all those little parts that will get you.

If you want to keep A/C, get a Dual Core Del Sol VTEC radiator.
I believe the Automatic Civic Sedans are also dual core as well.
For the a/c, get a Del Sol VTEC a/c bracket. It will let you mount your D series compressor on the B series block.

Thanks! And darn...putting the engine in tommorow and dont have the del sol bracket. Do you think I can at least get the compressor to fit for now with the belt hooked up.
I dont need it running just would rather put the belt and unit on now so I dont have to go through the headache later.
