Default distributor mystery

Alright so I have a 99 civic lx with a lsv and obd1 p28, when I did the swap I used a b16 distributor housing with the internals from my stock y7 distributor. Everything worked flawlessly for 3 yrs till yesterday I swapped the distributor to a 2000 civic si and my tach stopped working, I realize I need to wire the blue tach wire up but was wondering how my old distributor was sending a tach signal with no tach wire?
