D16y8 in place of d16z6
Spun a bearing in my d16z6, 93 si. Bought a used motor told it would work. It ended up being a d16y8. It wouldn't run with the distributor that came with the motor so ended up having to use the z6 one. I cant quite get it to run right, I can get it to the point where it idles fine but when I try to accel it sometimes stalls. I drove it home from the dealer where I work which is about 60 kilometers. Seemed to be extremely slow. Other than base timing is there something else needed to make this engine run normal? It is still the d16z6 ecu. Is there a difference in 02 sensors? Thanks, i'm a rookie with Hondas.

Use the stock y8 distributor and you'll need a distributor jumper harness ( obd-1 to obd-2 harness) and You'll be fine that's what my friend did. Harness was found at passwordjdm

Also it would be good to use the Y8 basemap, but you'll have to "chip" the ECU as the base timing is different between the two. Any check engine lights?

Re: D16y8 in place of d16z6
so apparently the dizzy that came with the engine I bought is not a y8 dizzy because it has two connectors. I have the jumper harness now but I need to get a y8 distributor. Trying to find one on ebay but no one has engine codes in their descriptions just 96-98 or 99-00 1.6L distributor. Are they all the same? Thanks!

Get a D15B7/D15B8 distributor, identical to the Y7/Y8 distributor but it has OBD1 connectors so you don't need to cut and splice anything or use a conversion harness. Y8 wont run right with a stock P28 btw, timing is different, Z6 is 16° BTDC Y8 is 12° BTDC.

Needs to be chipped should be dyno tuned really. At the very least it will need a basemap for this setup (IIRC you start with Z6 maps and adjust the timing and fuel maps)
A lot of guys aren't aware of the timing differences.

Your engine will run fine with the P28 ECU -- the timing differences are there, but it will still run fine. If you need to pass emissions or something you will want to change it, but don't let the comments here let you think that it won't run and drive fine with the P28 computer (even unchipped). The fueling differences aren't that great. Hell I'd use the P28 ecu and adjust the timing at the distributor until it runs the way you want. It's not the correct way, but everyone on here wants to spend money on things that can really be worked around. Especially if high performance isn't your main concern. No TRUE OBD1 map exists for the Y8 so unless you're getting it dyno tuned I wouldnt bother.
Disclaimer: My best friends beater is a 95 coupe originally with a z6, now with y8 and p28 ecu when the z6s oil consumption got bad). He gets around 500km or more to a tank and it drives just fine.
