Default D16Y8 in 88-91 CRX

is the D16Y8 (vtec) motor from the newer civics (i think the 96+) a bolt-on to the 88-91 CRX? if so, will the tranny from the 88-91 CRX bolt-on to the motor like it would to the D16Z6? thanks.

well... i got a deal on a d16y8 from a 99 civic ex with approx. 38K miles on it... and the guy wants $700 for it. do you think this is a good deal? i would be getting the tranny, ecu, and engine harness too.

to do a swap into a crx... what do i need? this would be in a DX model. i am aware that the SI/HF is different from the DX. i was planning to buy an SI ecu from a friend and have ZDYNE reprogram it for the single-wire vtec ECU... but will the DX harness work with the SI ecu?

I don't really want this to be a hard swap that require too much re-wiring. thanks for any help.

Yes that is a good deal i paid 850 for mine. The crx tranny has the same bolt pattern, and the clutch and pressure plate is the same as well (throw out bearing is different though). You will have to remove the drivers side motor mount bracket from the y8 and replace it with the one from your stock motor (bolt pattern and angle are different), and you will have to trim the timing belt cover to accept the different bracket. I have one sitting in my garage, but i am gonna use the y8 wiring, intake, and all the stuff. Just contemplating on whether to use the obd2, or convert to obd1, or use a zdyne si ecu. You will have to use an si distributor as well, unless you are gonna convert to obd2. Hope this helps. I will have more info after i start my swap in a week or so.

thanks for the info... yeah i wanted this motor so i can use the si distributor.. which hopefully won't be that hard to get... i want to be able to use all crx parts (such as the ecu, distro, etc.)... this was mainly due to the fact that the d16z6 won't accept the si distro... without modification...

as for the ecu.. i much rather the zdyne ecu... since i have heard so much about it.. thanks a lot for reply.. and please keep me updated after you complete the swap.. i haven't gotten the motor yet.. but my friend said he'll hold it for me.. since he originally got it for his 97 civic hatchback cx.. but he wanted a stronger motor.. so this one is on hold for me..

i was just unsure of how hard or complicated the swap was.. i wanted the easiest swap possible for the crx.. but when you do get the chance... please email me at gcboy@bellsouth.net because i would like to ask you more questions knowing that i will run into a lot of trouble trying to swap this motor into the crx.. thanks a lot though... and good luck with your swap

Here is about how far i got. I have removed the y8 tranny, and now i have the timing belt assembly removed for a new water pump and timing belt. Better now while it is in the garage and not on the car. Take a look at the oil dipstick, do you see the motormount bracket just to the right of it? Notice the placement of the two studs that go to the motor mount, that needs to be removed and replaced with yours. I am gonna work on it next week or so, school will be done for a while

gcboy - there is one major thing that you have to be careful of - i also have a dx and in order to do an engine swap, i need to replace or wire in a lot of wires. the dx is not a multi-port intake. if you put the multi port engine into the crx, you will need a different ecu, one that deals with the mpfi, and you will need to either wire in or replace the engine wiring with the new wiring for the mpfi.

sorry to say, but it will most likely be a pain in the but, since the wiring goes up behind the dash on both sides of the car. good luck, and hope everything works out for you.

crxplus: yeah i was afraid of this.. i was aware of the multi-port on the si/hf... and knowing that the dx has the duel-port (i think)... or something like that... it would be pretty hectic doing the swap... i was planning on purchasing an si ecu from a friend... but i wasn't too sure what other parts i needed to replace... thanks for your input though... and i'll keep y'all posted on what i decide to do.. i still haven't purchased the motor... because i want to know all these yet.. and the zc is still on the back of my mind... hehe

The zc is mpfi as well, so you would have to convert the wiring to mpfi to do a zc swap as well. The benefits of getting the d16y8 would mean that you would:

1. Be getting a motor out of a 96 or newer vehicle which generally means lower mileage
2. You can do a carfax of the vin and know excatly what the motors history is.
3. You won't be given a lowball 30-40k mileage estimate. (which is always too low for a 10+ yr old car. I don't car how small japan is, and how strict their restrictions are. Hell i put more miles on my bike in a year weekend riding then some of these motors supposedly have.)

Just a suggestion, but you could pickup a si engine wiring harness, dist and ecu. Some people actually have all the parts you need to do an mpfi swap in their garage. (Actually I have a complete extra d16a6 with tranny)
