Default d16a vs ZC vtec

looking for a good get around engine for my friends EK civic sedan. When to my local importer and they had two D series engines, a "d16a" with black valve cover and a "ZC" with a silver valve cover. Both are SOHC vtec, both seem to be obd1, does anybody know the difference??

there are both Vtec and non-vtec SOHC ZCs. with the fact that both these engines say vtec on the valve cover and both have vtec solenoids, im pretty sure they are both vtec.
