Actually the hydro tranny from the Y8 would be a little harder to use. The general rule is to use an 88-91 D series cable tranny. Now that HASport has the EF B series hydro mount kit out, you should be able to use the upper tranny mount and actuator parts for a D series tranny in an EF if you wanted.

will a tranny from an 88 dx D15 fit the y8 block? modification necessary or no?

Any 88-91 D series tranny will bolt directly to the block - DX, Si, HF, STD, etc. The tranny to engine bolt pattern are the same for all D series from 88-00. Just use the respected flywheel and clutch component combo for the type and year tranny you use.
