Considering Swapping to B18C1/B18C5 in EK! ADVICE!
I have a 1997 CX Hatch and considering swapping to a B18C1 or B18C5 but here's my problem.
I need to know what makes a B18C5 Type-R different from a B18C1 GSR because I'm planning on going turbo in the future and someone told me that if I go turbo, its better to stick with the GSR rather then the Type-R. His reason was, "You have to remove everything that makes them an R if you want to have a reasonable turbo set up." Then there was someone else telling me that his completely wrong so I'm not sure who to believe. Need more advice on this.
I was always planning on sticking with a B18C5 Type-R but if the first person is correct about replacing everything that makes it a "Type-R," I guess its better to stay with the GSR right?
So what exactly is "made" different between the two engines.
P.S. I'm new to this tuning, please bare with me.

The GSR has a lower compression than the Type R. The Type R is around 11.0:1+ compression on the pistons. So when turboing, yes it would be best to go with the GSR. And also, yes, to turbo, you'd take away the high compression pistons of the Type R that make a Type R what it is.
Hope it helps.

Do a search.
The higher compression of the ITR engine is just the start.
The ITR is by FAR superior. More power, better tranny, better crank, nicer head, limited slip differential, etc etc etc
You can turbo ITR engines just fine. The higher compression needs more careful tuning but is still superior than a GSR engine.

Hmm I think i'll stick with the ITR cause if i'm gonna get the engine, take me maybe 2 years till i get the turbo set up etc.

Could you give me a reason why to go B18B instead then? I just like to see everyone's perspective on this, give me more of an idea on what to do.

pretty sure Type R's have slightly higher compression and a little lumpier cams than the GSR , also, LS blocks (b18a/b) respond well to turbos from the lower compression with the pistons. i' ve seen some pretty ballsy ls turbos from stock pistons and turbo kits. of course your gonna be faster if you replace pistons, rods, rings, with even lower compression for a turbo set, but ive seen stock internals run pretty good. id say and simple LS set up with a bottem end rebuild, a huge snail and some big slicks. thats just me, good luck with whatver u do.

Yea, I would consider a b18b swap first, which can be had way cheaper than a gsr or itr swap. You can have a turbo'd b18 setup stock internals which well tuned and on a low psi can make 250 hp at the wheels. All this can be had for less than an type-r swap. Read up on the forced induction board, and be sure to search the basics cause eveyone will get pissed at you if you dont

My friend used to have an eg with a stck b18b in it with a bolt on turbo kit and very little tuning and it ran great. as far as money is concerned the b18b is way cheaper than the b18c1 or b18c5, and easier to find. As far as bling factor you cant beat the R. hope this helps a little bit and doesnt confuse you more. If going turbo I would choose the b18b all day long!
