Choosing an ECU for a LSVTEC build
 
Hey guys I have a 1997 Honda Civic Hatchback with a b18b1 block and a 2000 b18c1 gsr head. I’m a little confused on what I should run for an ecu. So far I’ve come up with the idea to run a p72 with a obd2a-obd2b conversion harness to make it work and then get a Hondata chip later down the road. Not sure if that’s the right way to go about doing it or is anyone else knows of a better ecu to run.

Hondata/Neptune and other chips only work with OBD1 ECU.

You need to get an OBD1 P72 or P28, and run an OBD2 -> OBD1 conversion harness.

Note that if you live in California, you will not pass emissions with this setup.

I previously used a chipped P06 w/VTEC added which can be bought for around $100. Check OfferUp & or CL, but make sure to test the ECU out before buying. As for the chip/tune; I used a base-map chip ordered from HAMotorSports until I was able to get a tune and/or Hondata. (I Eventually I picked up a P28 with a Hondata S300 v3 and got it tuned)

  • I would try and stick to a P72 or P28 like suggested above.
  • As for your specific chassis year/setup, you're going to need an OBD2A to OBD1 conversion harness.
  • And yeah, In CA, you'll need a smog guy.

Thank you so much lol, really helped me out there. Gonna go with a hondata chipped p28 with a conversion harness. I’m in Canada so that doesn’t affect me at all with the smog or emissions tests or whatever they are lol .
