I don't completely understand your question, but when I chipped my ecu, I got what I needed at Fry's Electronics. Any good electronics store should be able to provide you with what you need....
I just reread your post...accept not except...
Anyway, you can solder the chip directly into the pcb of the ecu. You will need a good desoldering tool. Good luck.

I am also interested in this process.

I have been told that the socket is like $33 at radio shack.

I'm going to look into it, and i'll do a full writeup/post part #'s later.

for the P28

28 pin DIP socket = depends on the type machine or regular or ZIF
20 pin 74HC373 (DIP for USDM ecus, SOP for JDM (surface mount)
10k ohm resistor
jumper wire - (can be taken from a resistor if necessary)
optional 103k capacitor (not necessary)

The socket is no where near $33...I pretty sure all the parts needed ad up to under $10!!! Iv done this several times now, last time I went RS to get my stuff they said they didn't stock the sockets in the store anymore so I would need to start ordering them from http://www.radioshack.com...so I did.

Q. for eg6ajk: Iv pretty much mastered the p28 (I guess you could say), I soon need to chip a p06 to temporarily run my b20...are the procedures the same?

yes, P06/P05/PR4/P28/P91 use the same PCB boards (2 version - but alike). P75/P72 slightly different boards (no need for resistor).

JDM ecus small case are on their own and require 'asian' sized 74hc373 which is only avlaible in large quantites over 200-1000pcs

btw. I sell just the kits without chips for $15US shipped (snail mail) - for OBDI ecus includes all you need

note, i bought this socket for 99 cents at radio shack last week.

it's part number 283-1997, I think. I know the 1997 part is right. Anyway it's a 28 pin socket, there are a bunch of different ones, but you should be able to find it like that.

Speaking of Hondata, how different are the Hondata mods from just installing a chip alone? And could you modify a P28 to work with a Hondata, but run a programmers chip with the Hondata disconnected?

hondata is like chipping with a difference that you're able to get dataloggin as well real time data from it.

yes you can run a chip with hondata preped ECU

I bought one of thos "Mugen" chips and it made my car run like ****. I woudlnt reccomend one unless you bought it from a REAL company. I got mine off eBay so beware, they are selling bad chips now.... I removed mine. it runs better now, alot better.

sockets cost liek 10-50 cents each from an eletronics parts supply shop. As for bad chips becareful when handling them and do not exposse them to sunlight they get erased from uv rays. Thats why theres suppose to be a matallic sticker covering it. Most people cover it with normal paper.
