Car flipped over and motor was still running.... Worst case scenario?
I've got a friend that totaled his Civic which had a 96 JDM B18C swap. He just bought another Civic to put the motor in. When he flipped it, the car landed to rest on it's top and the motor was still running for a few mins. before he shut it off.
The motor cranks over by hand with no problem at all and the cold compression is strong. I took off the valve cover, intake and exhaust manifolds and the head looks good inside. The fluids were drained and there were no signs of coolant mixing with oil but it's kind of hard to tell really. What could be some of the problems that might exist from the motor running while the car was upside down?

Well I would think the only problem to worry about would be the oil draining from the oil pan seeing as the rest of the car is pretty much self-contained, as long as everything looks ok, not much else to do besides start the car.

Well I would do that, but I have to install it into his new Civic first. I just wanted to ask about the possible issues before doing all that work, then to find out it needs to be yanked back out and rebuilt.

yeah, all i can think of is the oil. but there are galleries where oil is returned from the head to the pan, meaning that oil protected the head while the engine was upside down because oil drained to the head. its the crank and rod bearings you should worry about.

u should be alright, as long as the motor was not being rev'd while upside down... as the only issue would be oil starvation from the main and rod bearings... inspect those bearings and look for wear or scaring from being overheated (i seriously doubt that they are)

oil is drained back to the oil pan by gravity.
It is then picked up by the oil pump and pumped back up to the bearings and other parts of the motor.
If the car flipped, oil would dump towards the cylinder head and the oil pump wont have any oil to suck.
You mentioned that the car was running for a few minutes. It was also running without oil for about the same amount of time.
Bearings (crank, cams, piston pin) are the first to wear out if a car flipped. Pistons will be "soaked" in oil its it should be ok.
