Boosted B20 VTEC or Boosted K20a?
Thinking about selling my WRX in a few months to build a hybrid EK hatch.
The B20 has more torque off the line but the K20a is a freakn K20a! B20 is cheaper to build while the K20 costs an arm and a leg. I've heard of people hitting 500 give or take with Boosted B20 VTEC's. The K20's are newer and the Pacman vs Utah video speaks for itself. What are your 2 cents?
I'm a Subaru guy by the way so keep the flaming to a minimum.

That is hard to do with stock sleeves. B20 = 84mm LS. Thats all a B20 is.
If you have money to spend, K-series will give you a very nice HP.
Whats your power goals?

What is your e.t with the wrx? Why do want to sell it? Go b20 and put the mony that you would have put in to the k20a into the b20, and b20 long blocks are a lot less replace.

I'm in the same situation. I don't really want to mess with the engine on the WRX. The engine is so compact and hard to work on. I doubt it that my WRX can hit 450-500 WHP. I want to hit these numbers with the B20 or K20.

I have a WRX and a CRX. I follow the WRX forums too. WRX buildups are expensive. Impression I get is that the knowledge base is not as broad too. Impressions are to get 400 to 500 hp out of a WRX with a dependable built motor is around 10k for the motor. Turbo upgrades, injectors, engine management, new exhaust, FMIC or big TMIC etc. Then the trannies are weak (WRX). So people swap out to STI 6 speeds.. expensive, say around 6 to 7k.
When I bougth my WRX I planned on upgrades. But due to the costs I have kept it stock. If I start another project car it will be my CRX. Just a lot more options and less money and easier to work on. The WRX for example has 4 cams, two on each side of the motor which makes can swaps expensive. Not many engine shops have experience with the boxer 4 motor. I have seen stage III and IV longblocks for 22,000$ (yes twenty thousand dollars). Check the Rigoli guys in OZ, ESX in California etc...

may i ask why you want to pull those number with a b20 or a k20??? is it going to be a daily driver, becuase if it is then your screwed because theres noway you can drive that car light to light with any problems... another thing is where are you planning to get the money for this. Yea you can sell the wrx but thats probably not going to be enough for a k20 boosting nearly 20 psi with the block holding up. With the b20 your going to have to re sleeve it because the walls are weak, you will have to build it just like the k20... im sorry to say but in realality your probably not going to beable to acheve these numbers.... did you think about suspension?? your going to need that also, as well as brakes to stop the car.... why dont you just build a b20/VTEC with ctr pistons, some good cams, port and polish with 5 angle valve job... and in a ek that should run around mid 13s, and you can still drive it home after a long day of run after run.... just my opinon, but good luck

Why do people think that if you have 500hp its a daily driver. The only way your gonna have a daily driver 500hp is if your gonna be driving with damn racing gas all day witch I doubt. Well As in the question hum..... like everyone is sayin K20 Is a good motor but it all comes down to if u have the $$$ for it. Is money an issue? If so then go B20 If its not why not go K20

HP isnt what gets you down the road... its tourqe! and i know that i have seen some b20/VTECs that have run low 12s in a stripped down eg... so i know a b20/VTEC would be enough for you, theres no need for 500 hp to go 12 seconds in a quarter mile with a honda when the guy in the other lane put $3,000 dollars less in the motor then you did and still can hang! N/A b20/VTEC is the way to go
