block girdle opinions.
Well I finally got my b20 block....what do you think of the z10 block girdle thing? Any opinions from users or ex users. Is it a necessity? I am building the bottom end...is that enough to rev to 8500rpm?

Re: block girdle opinions. (baonest)
The LS bottom end is good to about 8K, then <insert fart sound here> I mean, it's not a guarantee that it'll crap out on you, but it's likely. Given that the B20 block is even worse as far as R/S ratio goes, you can be assured it would need it more.
If you wanna rev to 8500 reliably, I would say you NEED a crank girdle. The I have heard that the Z10 needs machining, but I don't know about that as I have never seen the Z10 up close. The only downside to using the GSR girdle is that it does not just bolt to the LS caps and machining, although not too extensive, is needed. I have done research, and other posts (such as the one detailing the machining) on this are true.
You cannot just machine down the caps to fit a GSR girdle and bolt it up, as it will not suppost the crank much at all. In order to mod a GSR girdle properly, you need to have the girdle dowelled AND have the caps modded to accept the girdle and actually have it hold the crank in place, rather than just rest on the caps.
Machine shops can charge as much as $100 to do this and you still will need to line bore the mains as the machine work will distort them.
So, yes, it is recommended if done properly... or you can just save for a complete GSR block.

B20's and LS's have the same r/s ratio.

Just bore size, 84mm vs. 81mm.
So, THAT'S why the damn sleeves are soooo weak !

Re: block girdle opinions. (allmotorgurl)
If you do get a Z-10 block girdle . Make sure you re line bore the main caps WITH the girdle on !!!! I cannot stress this enough. If you do not, your crank will NOT spin freely . I have seen this happen in both of my motors. Both blocks were line bored/honed without the girdle and the crank does spin fine without the girdle . Once the girdle is put on there will be at least one sticky spot (feels like the crank is binding) in the rotation of the crank . If this is done properly they work great ! It'll spin to 9800 no problem as long as all the rest of your tolerances are in order.
