Default b20vtec OR LSvtec...what has more potential for NA ?

Im having a hard time deciding on which setup to run with partly because I hear so many diffrent things from so many diffrent ppl, so I hope you guys can help me clairify my decision.

First of all I do plan on going all out on this setup fully built head and block my main question is which block has the most potential for a NA build.

Secondly I hear that b20 only has about 8-10 more lb's of torque over an ls in which case why would i pay 750+ for a complete b20 motor when im only going to be using the shortblock when I can just pickup a ls block for $50-100 ?

Am I just missing the whole concept of why ppl use b20's here ? please enlighten me, ppl with b20's or just the knowledge please tell me why you choose/would choose one over the other.

thanks in advance guys

b20 would ultimately have more POTENTIAL....like the saying...no replacement for discplacement. you can always get more HP/TQ out of the bigger engine....just depends on if you wanna spend the $$$ up front for it.that's your call

Look at dyno graphs of the B20 compared to B18. The B20 has the same amount of torque at 2k that it does at 6.5k. The B20 is a real torquey engine all through the rev range. The B18 only hits those torques at high rpm.

Translation: with a B20, when you are cruising at 3k and you need to pass some old lady, there is no need to downshift. Pure passing pleasure. The torque is right there on tap.

so we arnt really considering potential,

this is actual benifits over hte LS.

i CANT wait to have my 2.0vtec running

(i hope the stock fuel system can handle it...)

thanks for the info guys it was honestly enough to make up my mind im going jdm b20b (usdm b20z), can anyone else add on to this ? can a completely stock b20 block handle revs of up to 9k+ on stock internals with a fully built head ? even tho its not ment to rev past 6k ?

Sure, you can pick up a high mileage, rusty, POS B18A1 block for 100, maybe, but that 799 CRV block is a low mileage LONGblock with intake and exhaust manifolds, tec. JDM B18 and B20's usually run the same price, or within $100 of easch other.

so true.
the short time it takes to go from 60mph to 120+ in FIFTH gear is ******* amazing.

everybody says you can't rev these motors high for long, but the setup i have has been running strong for almost a whole year now. my rev limiter is 8500 on stock head and bottom end.

well let me shed some light too. i have an ls, i just put into my 99 civic. now the reason i went with the ls is because i am on a budget right now. the ls and the b20 are the same engine. the b20 is bored a little more but if it is the same engine then the ls can be bored also. so i figured i am going vtec turbo so i will go with the cheaper engine and save money now and pay the same or maybe a few dollars more later and i will still have 2.0L and the stroke is a little better on an ls from what i hear. why pay more money now when you can get the same engine or atleast block for less. trust me i did alot of thinking and asking and the guy who told me this i asked him why about 500 times because everyone was saying go b20 but is you can get an ls cheap which you can then get the ls and build it and it is just as strong and can be made into a b20.
sorry for the long post. just my .02.
peace

negative, the B20 has different sleeves from factory,

it is not a 'bored' B18 block.

least thats what ive heard...

Can I just resleeve a B18c or B18c5 block to 84 mm?

If you’re going to go as radical as ductile iron sleeves, we'd just stay with a B18c5 or B18c block. The reason we like the B20b/z blocks is for the special sleeves they have that allow the bore to get safely up to 84mm. So if you're inserting those in the block just save yourself: the price of the block, and work by not having to externally route the oil line for the Vtec head. One thing to remember is that the cylinder walls of the B20b/z blocks are thicker than the all the other B series blocks. So you might have a 84 mm B18c5 block with super-double-wack sleeves but it’s not the equivalent of a B20b/z block with its thicker walls and the same sleeves.

None of the top 5 all motor guys use headswap engines so why would you?
becasue they have the funds to build up these motors, unlike most of us who dont have sponsors or endless bank accounts so we need tricks like head swaps to produce the high hp numbers we want for cheap.

Peak power is worthless on an unreliable or overpriced engine.
yes, true, but how is a CRVTEC setup unreliable and overpriced...

hey guys...who are in favor of head swaps...i can get a jdm b16 head less the dist. and intake manifold, for 450 shipped. do you think it is worth it or should i wait for a gsr. know i am pretty sure the head are very similiar. and i plan to do all the upgrades to it...port and polish and such. so should i get the head or wait.
and the second question is will my ls intake and dist. fit the head for the time being. i will eventually get something better but i only have money to get the head and save a little and get the work done. thanks and sorry for threading on a thread but you guys seem to know what you are talking about.
thank you

it's the same price to buy a crower 2.1L stroker kit and have it installed as it is to get a b20z block installed
you better pick up a helms man because you are currently bending over and getting rammed up the wazoo pretty badly.

or you're smoking some DAMN good crack.

hey - that's a bit unfair,

im sure there are plenty of guys who smoke crack and can install a B20VTEC for less than a Crower stroker kit...

man, for the same $2299.00 you could get:

*a B20Z block (750)
*a set of JE pistons (400)
*a set of eagle rods (500)
*set of ARP rod and head bolts/studs(150)
*all the oil line/etc hardware (100)

and still have a better engine?

anyways,

the question was regarding LSvtec VS b20vtec - not stroker kits.
