Default b18b into a 89 civic DX hb? easy as it seems?

hey guys. i have a 1989 civic hb DX. i am looking to do a swap and i was planning to buy a complete 1st gen b16a swap with a cable tranny. simple enough.
HOWEVER, i met a guy who is trying to sell his b18b motor with everything (ecu, tranny, etc) HOWEVER, i know his hydro tranny isnt very compatible with my car due to it originally being a cable tranny. so heres the scenario:

would it be possible to just buy the LS swap MINUS his tranny. so ill have the b18b motor and ecu, etc. and afterwards, ill go and pick up a b18a cable tranny (im pretty sure the 90-93 integs used cable trannys) and bolt it right up? or will there be problems?

if anyone has ever used a b18b engine from a 94+ integ WITH a 90-93 integ 5 spd tranny, can u tell me if its worth all the trouble? compatibility issues.?

OR do u guys think i should just wait and get a 1st gen b16a swap? let me know
thanks guys

B18B with cable tranny from 90-3 integra or B16a cable tranny will work well ...
if the tranny is 92-3 you can reuse the newer clutch disc otherwise use 90-1 clutch disc.

ecu and electronics are OBDI type which means that its going to be alot more work then typical 90-1 swap.
if you do want to work with this motor, i suggest getting non-obd electronics (b18a), ecu, injectors. on top of the tranny.
axles and shift linkage is still required

1st gen is much easier swap as its non-obd so no worries of tranny, or some crazy wiring changes but it is older and doesn't have the same torque.

personally I would go with a B20Z/b use non-obd electronics on it (rs/gs/ls 90-1), get a Y1 or YS1 or S1 or J1 (b16a tranny).

or if you don't feel like doing this you can make good power and make simliar HPs to LS with a mini-me or d16z6 or d16y8 or even d16a6 which doesn't require mount kit, shift linkages or axles. but remeber get a Si tranny as good gearing is required to be quick in SOHC. add few add ons such as cam, y8 intake, headers, ECU and you be at 130whp+

thanks for the advice..i am not deciding what engine i am going to get based on the "capabilities" of each. i am a fan of the b18b over the b16a due to larger displacement. so that is why if i can find a b8b motor CHEAPER than the b16a, i will jump on it. which brings me to this thread.i found the b18b swap for sale. so i want to get it IF and ONLY IF the swap wont be complicated as it seems. my obd0 and the cable tranny is what scares me. however, i am going turbo with this engine and i will want to use Hondata in the future so i will eventually buy a obd0 to 0bd1 conversion harness later on.

but i guess my REAL question is..

b18b motor, ecu, axles, etc and swap (MINUS the b18b hydro tranny)

OR

1st gen b16a complete swap from hmo

AND remember, the deciding factor isnt performance here..its compatibility issues..the guy is selling the whole swap MINUS the axels for $1000 picked up. so whatever the tranny costs MINUS $1000 is how much i will get it for.

and keep in mind that hmo b16a swaps go for $1100. so with some math, can someone suggest whether buying the LS swap here and all the extra parts to get it running right (cable tranny, axles, ecu etc) is worth it compared to buying a regular old b16a swap? thanks again

from that last post, it seems like getting the complete b16a swap is easier. due to the electronical things. but if i get the obd0 to obd1 harness conversion, will all the stuff i get from the b18b LS swap work?

if i were you, to makes things smog legal and cheap, go with the b18a + b16a (cable) tranny. since you have a hookup with b18b, you can do that, but use a b16 tranny, it has shorter gears and more worth your money. both ways you're gonna have to buy custom mounts. hasport/placeracing sells mounts and wiring connections to make your swap from obd0 to obd1 easy. it might cost a hundred or two, but it'll save the complications. goodluck

One more minor fly in the ointment: the distributors are different between 90-91 and 92 up. So initially you will need a 90-91 distributor too if you are going to run non obd because all b18b's are at least obd1.

You can use any B series USDM or JDM cable tranny with that motor

if anyone has ever used a b18b engine from a 94+ integ WITH a 90-93 integ 5 spd tranny, can u tell me if its worth all the trouble? compatibility issues.?
I have a 96 B18B1 in my 91 CRX DX. I used a YS1 cable tranny from a 92 USDM GSR. There are no compatibilty issues. Since you have a DX, the splines for the 90-93 Integra axles will fit them.

OR do u guys think i should just wait and get a 1st gen b16a swap
That depends on what you want. I prefer the low end torque of the B18B1 over the high revs of a B16A. Both motors are good, it's just a matter of choice. You could always build the LS into an LSVTEC or boost it. If you plan to go the B18B1 route, let me know and I can help you out with a parts list, wiring schematics or whatever.
