Default B18 with B16 Head vs. straight B16

I know I'm gonna hear it on this one...

It seems as though everyone (or most people) say/claim the B16 is a better/faster engine than the B18.

Wouldn't a B18 with a B16 give you more displacement, but at the same time allow you to keep the vtec? (I know some people aren't fond of vtec, but I like it)

My logic is probably flawed in more than one area, mainly from my limited experience on engines. But it seems as though when anyone asks newbie questions in this forum, they are hailed by a torrent of flames and merciless remarks...

this has been done, it's called LS/VTEC when you use an LS block with a VTEC head. You're gonna need to interchange a bunch of different parts, but if you do it right, this is a good set-up

not all the time it's called lsvtec, you can use type r block or gsr too. the blocks are a lot different aren't they?(amongst the b18 blocks)

either b18(b-c1-c5) would make a good set up and It would be better than just a b16a on a stock leve

A lot of people swear by this idea. Some take it a step further and use a b20 bottom with a b16 head. 2 liter vtec. People make some amazing power out of both these setups.

The only flaw in all this is that if you want the power benefits, you still have to rev them as high as a b16, and the b18 and b20 are just not designed for that. There's no way you'll retain the same durability as a stock engine.

well what do you do to help get that high rpm durability. do you just put block savers in or something else.

you cant get higher rpms w/ a bigger engine because of the rod to stroke ratio

Well, what Honda does is they increase the length of the rods, probably balance stuff better, put in girdles, oil jets, and probably some other things....and in cases they put in lighter rods and pistons, and coat them with molybdemum to decrease friction....and God knows what else.

What could you do? I don't think anything that the aftermarket offers would give you an uncompromized solution, as in the perfect combination of durability and streetability.

Use a B17 crank and you have an excellent rod stroke ratio. Your displacement goes down slightly, but you can rev it much higher than the stock B18A/B/B20 crank. Finding a B17 crank is the hard part.

I believe LS/Vtec's have good rod stroke ratio's for a nitrous motor. There is lots of archived info on the ls/vtec topic.

ok say i use the stock gsr bottom end and a stock b16a head
can i mill the head to get the compression back to normal ?
my friend has a b16a and wants more power
but dosnt wanna go through the hassle of swapping internals
would a stock b18c1 bottom with milled b16a head be a good idea?
thanks
