no experience should take around 1 - 3 hours unless you get some really siezed bolts or something like that.

My first swap was done a couple of weeks ago in my 98 hb. I dropped a b18b. It's pretty easy and straight forward, took me 4hrs too pull the motor out, but it was in 25 degree NYC weather with about 6inches of snow on the ground (did it in my friends back yard. Using just a 148pc Craftsman tool set and other misc. hand tools. No air compressor, no power tools, no engine hoist (did the ghetto pull engine out from the bottom deal).

could take you 5 hours working with one friend if you dont know what yer doing.
could take you one hour if you have done it before and everything comes out a-ok.

I didn't know jack **** on what I was doing when I took my D16Y8 out and it took me about an 90 minutes or so. I was pleased with how quick it went, considering the driver's side axle was being a *****...

I think it's pretty dependent on the tools you have at your disposal.
In other words, do you have an engine hoist and/or lift, or are you gonna be lifting it out with a team of camels & some rope? Air tools or a Bob Vila grip-it wrench? Good penetrating spray, or a stick of butter & a microwave?

It could easily take a half a day or more depending on the car. Some things can really hold you up. Take for example the axles. You're supposed to removed the lower ball joint. If they are jammed and you don't have the proper tool that could easily take you an hour of banging and wedging. Are you removing the CAT? If so you can figure another hour (unless you can cut it out with a torch). How about your old motor, are you looking to sell it or is is trash you don't car about. If you do care you might be moving odds and ends like throttle body / TPS, distributor, etc. to prevent it from being damaged. Does your car have A/C or power steering. If so that can hold you up. Are you going to mark all the connections? Or are you going to hope you can remember where they all go? Are you replacing the shif arms? If so figure more time.
I'd say first time, trying not to damage stuff, marking all connections, storing the fasteners (nuts & bolts), removing items to gain good clearance, etc. it would take about 3-4 hours.

Air tools and Honda engine pulling couldn't be easier!
Thats a huge benefit to these cars is how everything is so easy to work on.

woth a cherry picker, hand tools, and no need to keep most of the engine parts= fast time!!!(hour-2.5 hours) putting stuff back is always the hard part!
just take your time, dont rush and ruin stuff!
edit: keep the castle nut on the ball joint when you are hitting the LCA to help prevent you messing up the threads

pulling a 93 prelude motor without air tools and with stuck bolts took me about 8 hours or so......it sucked really bad, it was really cold outside and the garage had no insulation and no heat....it was only good to block the wind. preludes are really really complicated.....i'll take a civic any day of the week. super easy.

very true about the tools at your disposal...
i work at a dealer so its pretty straight forward..about an hour.
now without all these luxuries, in a crappy house garage and no air...about 3.5 or so...BTW,preludes suck to work on.
