Another B20 bites the dust...
Not mine...dont worry *knock on wood*
But this is a prime example why stock LS/CRV rods should not be used in high revving applications.
This guy I know had a B20VTEC revving to something like 8500 RPMs.
Well...just the other day...BAM...broke a rod in two and came out through the block! Now his B20 is junk.
The "funny" thing is that the motor was "built" up in the begining...or more rebuilt actually. It had new rings and stuff put in...so he had a chance to throw some Eagle rods in..but didnt. Now he paid the price.
Careful with your setups guys...
Im kinda "nervous" about mine although the most I ever rev to is 7700 and only until 3rd gear...Ill never take 4th and 5th that high....way too much load.

Why don't you look into getting some forged rods for your car now? And while you are in there, get a set of high comp pistons. You got lots of power now, would be even nicer with higher compression.
Your motor is worth the investment. During the rebuild if you need your car bad, just drop a d16y5 back in there for a while! That would be funny.

Heh...Im planning a rebuild soon...hopefully it wont be too late
I dont have the D16Y5 anymore..and it would be a pai to swap it back in. Id rather buy a used B18B block and use that while the B20 block gets rebuilt.

8500 RPM'son a stock rod!!!!!!! That is gonna blow, mayB 7500 rpm. I am about to build my B20Vtec all stock and not rev past 7500. 8500 is just crazy on a stock motor.

Uh, stock rods will not break from high rpms.... I know, because I know quite a few people running all-motor setups with high compression LS/VTEC and B20-VTEC motors. They all had their stock rods shot peened and used ARP rod bolts. Anyone with engine building experience knows that rod bolts are what goes first from high-revving applications because stock rod bolts tend to stretch over time if revved too high, not rods. Rods only break when boost is applied to the motor because it's a lot more sterss on the rods (and among other things inside your block). I know a couple personally who have shot-peened their stock LS rods on one LS/VTEC and one B20-VTEC and both are shifting past 9000 when racing..... been like that for over a year now and still no problems. If it's built right, then it'll last long. If you guys still believe that aftermarket rods are needed, then feel free to spend that extra $350 on some nice, strong rods. But if you're not planning on doing any type of forced induction, I personally feel it's money that can be spent elsewhere to build up your motor.

You should always use some forged pistons. Why go cheap? You can get a set of crower rods, or pauter rods, or ealge rods that would hold up to high revs. Oh wells i guess he will learn from his mistake.

Newman, you make some good points. However, once you throw a little preignition into the mix, all of a sudden you get a situation that stock rods cant handle all that well. Race teams manage to do wonders with stock bottom ends, which most of the time are exceptionally tuned. Aftermarket rods are good insurance for most people.

It all depends on how well its built. Stock rods are fine as long it put together the right way. I'm using stock rods on my LS/VTEC and I have no doubt its not gunna break. I have ARP bolts which I think is a must. As for forged pistons.. they are not necessary for going N/A. I use OEM Honda pistons myself. Stock parts are strong enough to handle lots of HP if tuned right. Revving to 8500 RPM shouldnt break anything... poor tuning breaks things. My friends old HB was boosting 14lbs on the street as a daily driver..and 18 at the track... with STOCK internals.

Re: Another B20 bites the dust... (HX_Guy)
I agree with Newman, as I have 22,000 miles, almost 2 years, on my lsvtec using stock rods(w/arp studs). I drove this thing several times for 19 straight hours, except gas stops, oh yeah, that is at 90 mph with a y1 trans., never had any problems, except the oxygen sensors. Just another testomony, if it is built right, then it will last.
