Default 1st generation B16a motor questions

My friend wants to put a B16a motor in his CRX and I found a 91 B16a motor. What type of ecu does this use? Is it non OBD? And I was also wondering for future reference if a motor that came from the factory bolted up to a cable tranny, would work with a hydro tranny. Thanks.

I'm not too sure about USDM 1st gen B16a engines, but the JDM versions use the PR3 ecu and it's non OBD. These engines came from the factory with cable trannies and it is possible to do a conversion to a hydro tranny. You'll have to get a conversion kit from Place Racing. I looked into doing the conversion as well but a lot of people say it's not worth the hassle.

There's no such thing as a 1st gen USDM B16A. They're all B16a2s, from the Del Sol VTECs, far as I know... the closest thing the US market got was the B17A in the '92-'93 GSR. Obviously the Del Sol VTEC engine would use the Del Sol VTEC ECU .

An easy way to tell if it's a 1st gen JDM engine is to check if there's not 1, but 2 oxygen sensors in the downpipe. If there IS, then it's a JDM engine. If there ISN'T, then it's a USDM engine and we can work from there .

Easiest way to tell engines......If it says: B18C or B16A ...then it is a JDM motor.

If it says: B18C1 or B16A2...then it is US.

The 1st gen B16a use either the Pr3 or the PWO ecu.

*Feels need to interject*

Stay away from the PW0 ECU, it's the DEVIL... that's the A/T ECU, with a 7500 rpm redline (though the fuel cut's probably the same, I'd imagine the timing and ignition curves are different... and I know that the VTEC engagement is different) .

And another thing to notice, The SIR1 B16A has a PGM-FI label on the Intake manifold while the SIR2 has nothing

eg6ajk, backwards bud, the PR3s came out of SiR-I and the PW0, which have an auto variant, came out of X/RSi's

Obviously not many know about the B16's!

B16a1 fits 88-91 civics only JDM
b16a2 fits 92-95 civics and the del sols JDM and USDM
b16a3 fits 96-98 civic only JDM

The computer for the b16a1 is a non-ODB ECU called the PR3, this one has 2 o2 sensors.

Bzzzzzzt!!

Care to try again??

The JDM models are not listed as B16A"X" Only as B16A's ..... there is no numeric like we have in the States, and the A1 and A3 is a label WE put on them to distinguish it for our reference. To the untrained, it is easy to confuse the two, and is one of the reasons you really need to find someone who has purchased from the dealer you're shopping from before so they don't try to sell you a 1st gen done up like a 2nd gen.

Just like the Integra VTEC models. They are all B18C, and the only way to REALLY tell is to look at the pistons to see what code they have on them, and the cams.

Want to know why? It has to do with the emissions testing and the replacement aspect of the engine on JDM soil, or something like that. By not putting a generational number like we have in the states, it is easier to replace the engines.

yah and to add..
there were no 1st gen B16A engines in the US.....
The US's first VTEC engine was the 92 GSR/B17A engine....crazy huh? we get a B17A engine which Honda of Japan doesn't even offer over there!

There's another type of JDM 89-91 B16A ECU known as a PWO. Although, the PWO isn't super chipper friendly....your better off with a PR3 ECU if you plan on reprogramming it in the future.

The PW0 ECU is not from the CRX SiR. It's from the Integra X-Si, which did come with an automatic transmission from time-to-time. It also uses a JDM B16A engine, hence the combo... tell me again I don't know much .

Is this the Katman who I wrote about getting my PR3 reprogrammed through JDMHondaParts.com?

I'm still working on getting the cash to do it, I'm not blowing you off!
