My project: F22/AP1 Swap, HKS exhaust, Koyos
Recently undertook a project in anticipation for summer. Feedback is appreciated.
Began with a 2001 Berlina Black AP1. Started by pulling the motor out.
All the way out.
Now its for sale, serial number and all. Check my FS thread.
Donor F22 motor came from this car...
...when it turned into this:
And now looks like this in the AP1's engine bay:
Serial number.
Now some tech info before I get locked:
The whole swap, including removal of both motors from the original chassis, and the installation of the F22, took two weeks. All OEM hardware were used, aside from the listed mods. They include:
-Koyo S2000 radiator
-Koyo 1.3 kgf/cm cap
-Samco upper and lower radiator hoses, blue
-Mugen fan switch
Key difference that I noticed between the AP1/AP2:
-Use the existing AP1 transmission mount; the AP2 mount is about 1/2" wider, and will not fit on the chassis.
-Driveshaft hex bolts are 6mm on the AP1 and 8mm on the AP2, on both the transmission output shaft and rear end, necesitating complete driveline swap. I also used an AP2 rear housing/diff to make things easier. From then on it bolted right to the axles.
-It is necesary to swap the ignition lock cylinder, and the immobilizer ring, but not the keyless entry. This requires cutting of the ignition cylinder dead bolt, but i found a 12mm bolt long enough to hold it on. If welding service was on hand it would be preferred.
-AP2 ECU, cluster, dash, dash harness, chassis harness, and engine harness were used. All essential sensors, including O2, ABS/wheel speed sensors, EVAP, fuel pump plugged right in.
-Plugs that didnt fit: Door harnesses. Being a genuine first gen, it did not come wired for tweeters, resulting in door plugs that were 2 wires short. Did a little surgery and swapped out the plastic plugs.
-Pluses of using an AP2 harness: The doors can now be wired for tweeters, rear defroster is available, but I still have a plastic window. Also gets the wiring for LED taillights, which will come on shortly.
A projekt I had on the side:
My AP2, black OEM interior installed the day I got it, from the '04 AP2 that donated the motor above.
OEM Engine bay, half of an AEM intake.
HKS Carbon-Ti
Close-up of the 60mm on the car.
The piping.
Compared against the 75mm.
This might sound like I'm defeating the purpose, but I used the stock piping from the cat all the way to the rear axle, right before the split. Yes, pre-silencer and resonator included. About 1 1/2 ft of SS piping were added and welded into one whole piece of exhaust. The picture I have of the piping is the whole of all the custom work that was done. I've listened for leaks, and there are none. I have never seen an HKS Carbon-Ti on an S2000, probably because HKS doesnt have an application for it. I've grown to love the tone and look of it, and have always wanted one. I can say I'm satisfied with it being a street exhaust, and am selling the 75mm because now it seems like I would never need anything that big.
Performance wise, the sound is a bit deceptive. I notice that the motor feels a bit more rev-happy around 4000-4500, and starts going about 2500, vs bogging until 3000 before. The car feels a bit lighter on its feet, probably from weight savings of an additional ~20lbs, on top of the 84lbs of carpet, spare tire, tool set, door panels. The sound volume is tolerable if you're a hardcore car person, but for its purpose right now it might be a bit too loud. Going from 2 twin loop mufflers to 1 straight through makes a difference. The car does drone a bit, due to the resonator tuning. If I were to go through the trouble of chopping off that resonator, I might as well get full SS piping. We'll see about that after I pick up some headers.
Thanks for reading. Any input is appreciated.

haha well informed. 9000rpms on a 90.7mm stroke is pretty steep. on the f20's 84mm stroke it might have been ok.

Hahahha it wasnt Jurassic Park, it was my hungry gf. 4'10, 280lbs of eating power. Hope she doesnt read this!
Thanks for the comments. The passenger one came from the black AP2, and fits differently than the other, which was bought separately. Why? I dunno... So buy a pair if you ever do.

Very nice! Your white AP2 looks hot!
the single exit exhaust doesn't even look that bad on the 04 rear bumper. I thought it would be worse.
nice job
