How long to change clutch?

Re: How long to change clutch? (rice4life)
I can't imagine it would be fun doing one on the ground with basic hand tools
If there was 3 tools to make sure you have, before starting- they are:
1.1/2 extension with 3/8s socket end. Mac makes one...its like 2 1/2 feet long and makes the upper start bolt and the bell housing bolts a BREEZE!
2. 14mm universal socket. Slip this on your long extension for the starter bolt. Gravy.
3. 17mm universal socket. For all those top bell housing bolts.
Other than that, they're not too bad. By myself I can get one done in under 2 hours. First one took me about 4. This is on a lift, all the special tools, and air.
I would expect 2 mechanically inclined people with hand tools on the ground would be between 5 and 6 hours.

It took me 4 hours the first time, I had it on a lift. Get some drive shaft bolt u might strip then trying to remove them. A socket allen key does not fit (Stupid Honda) . Its simple really

20k miles? that doesn't sound good since i just put an Exedy oem in mine.
the tranny didn't go in all the way because it was probably stuck on the dowel pins, it's common. i just put a couple of bolt in on each corners and tighten them down evenly.
if i live closer to you, i would take you up on that offer for the lift.
makes it much easier for the big jobs. </TD></TR></TABLE>
yeah it went to quick...but i was an idiot with the car at that time...the same time i went through 2 diffs in 10k haha. I was taking it to drag strips, went to deals gap, doing burnouts, drifting it in parking lots, sliding around in the rain. with all the money i have in it now i wouldnt do it lol.

well thanks for the input guys we got it done over the last 3 nights working roughly 3 hours a night.... only ran into one problem we got the tranny back on and even got the mounts on and realized we didnt put the clutch fork in.... so we had to pull it all back out. BTW i put in an oem exedy and a fidanza aluminum flywheel, it feels and drives great.

I also used a service manual but there a a few steps that can be skipped to speed up the process... i used this guys step by step instruction to do my clutch and it helped out alot. i suggest printing that off and using it as a reference.

Re: (ReddotsS2K)
act isn't including one anymore on there s2000 kits, i think cause act is losing money, or not breaking even. they also raised the prices of all there kits.
i only got the plate and the disc, act is not on my new clutch list, i really wish i got the spec now.

I have heard people using the handle off a broom stick before but never tried it. just thought i would throw the idea out there

Re: (rice4life)
the shop I use here for resurfacing etc sells aligntment tools for ~$2 or so if I remember correctly. I've had to buy 3 for different vehicles so far.
On a side note, my car has about 55k miles on it but I've no clue if the clutch has ever been changed (it's not slipping that i can tell). Should I just go ahead and change it due to mileage anyways?
The plan was to get the ACT flywheel and a ClutchMaster stage 2 clutch or thereabouts (just wanted something with a little bit more holding power than OEM).
The only RWDish car I've done a clutch on so far was a 2001 Impreza 2.5RS and the trans wouldn't go back on in the car so I pulled the motor out, sat it on the ground belt-side down and lowered the trans onto the 'back'. Even then still had to wiggle trans around and tap it a bit to get it in place.
How difficult would you guys say the S2k will be compared to that Suby?

Re: (kalm_traveler)
forgot about this thread.. well i gave up on the alignment tool and ended up just bolting on the prop valve and releasing the pressure off the pp and it slid right in like butter.
the rest was easy as ****, i'd say skip act,.. i was all about act, but spec is what i would go with now if i had the choice. Act is not including TOB/pilot/Aligment tools in ANY kits anymore, on top of that spec comes with all that plus a better friction disc, even thow friction discs don't make a clutch, it's all in the pp'

Spec clutches are well known for exploding and destroying the transmission case and other nearby parts in the process.
