Its just about to be winter here in Ny. Im planning on taking some time off of the car game this winter to build a kart mainly used for autocross. This will not be a crazy top heavy 1000cc bike engine kart. Although these are "intense", I'm planning on building something that is properly setup for racing. With a Proper power to weight ratio, Weight distribution ect..This is also not going to be a rigid up yard kart. Kart will be done cleanly and professionally built . This kart will utilize a Honda Gx200 engine (fully built) and hopefully a t15/t12 ball bearing turbo. Anyway i will post some start up pics soon and we will see where this takes me.

SUGGESTIONS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME

Two photos of the kart when i first purchased it a few months ago. Was in terrible shape. In need of full overhaul. After running it a few time i was hooked. This kart is actually used for packed clay oval racing. because of this the steering and suspension are a bit different side to side. However, because of the large range of adjustability in caster, camber, tow and ride height; with a little bit of cutting and welding i believe it will stand the task of auto cross

Got the kart fully stripped down and powder coated

Over the next few weeks i will be ordering parts and assembling the chassis. Thanks to Powder Tech, the powder coat looks great. Parts i now need are. New 1 1/4 rear axle 48in wide , rear axle bearings, gas tank, wheels/tires, front wheel hub bearings, front wheel hub spacer, new rear axle sprocket guard, rear bumper, brake rotor, Tie rod ends and a couple other small things i need for assembly. The kart currently has a single rear brake rotor with a split caliper. If funds permit i will be hopefully ordering a second caliper, rotor and set of pads to run 2 rear brakes

First- stop. If you are building this to autocross, make sure your sanctioning body will allow you to run it.. I'd just hate to see you go through all this effort and have no place to use it...

I did make sure that i would be able to run the kart. I went to the last event of the year in my area on October 10th and There were a few others with karts. Also when looking at the autocross section of the MoHud SCCA for season results. there is a kart class

Update: Just got most of the parts I ordered in today . New aluminum rear axle, wheel bearings and Hubs came in. I have always ran 1/8in wall steel axles so it will be interesting to see how the 1/4 in wall aluminum axle holds up to the abuse. The axle i ordered is 38 in wide. I am looking to extend the wheel base to gain some stability. From the outer lip of the 2 rear wheels i hope to be at 48in with everything installed. Im also playing around with the idea of offsetting the axle to hang over quite a bit more on the seat (or left) side of the kart. The bearing cassette on the left side of the kart does not hang on the outer most side of the frame rail as the right side cassette does. Will post pics and take some measurements tomorrow

BTW here is a list of parts i am planning on for the motor.

BLOCK

Stock sleeve gx200 clone block
Stock crankshaft
ARC billett connecting rod
Arias stock bore forged piston and wrist pin combo
Chromoly pushrods
Stock side cover
Billet flywheel
Bsp2 Cam (mild cam relatively good for mid range power and will work with stock spec valve train setup)
Stock lifters

HEAD

Predator Hemi engine head (want to bring the compression up to 10:1. Need to do some calculations to see how far we are going to cut up the head)
stock Seat stainless steel valves
33lb dual valve springs.
port and polish
Stock rocker arms (might do roller rockers depending on budget)
Will like to see between 9 and 10 k rpm

All of these things are going to be based on my budget and therefor am planning on getting my turbo kit complete before i order any internal engine parts. Will be calling a few places tomorrow to see if i can get some recommendations for turbo setups and such. IF anyone has any info let me know

Overall this should hold quite a bit. There is so little information out there about boosting these engines that this is going to be a little bit of trial and error. Stock the motor is 6.5 hp and i would love to see at least 50hp. There are people out there making around 30 all motor running alcohol on these engines. I would like to run this on leaded 112 octane that is easy available by my house.

I also need to start thinking about a turbo choice. I really need to do some more research. I do know ball bearing is a must if i am planning on getting anything to spool on this tiny thing.

Please again if anyone has any advice please let me know

lol @50hp

You will be lucky to break 25hp before the crank decides it would rather be outside of the case than inside...

There are a few people who have put turbos on these engines, but none of them have made any real power. These motors just do not respond well to ANY kind of forced induction.

You WILL be slower than any other "real" racing kart out there.

Just build the motor how you want for now and forget about the turbo. Have some fun for a season or two, then move up to a used Rotax or TAG kart. They can be found on craigslist for under $2k these days, ready to run.

These motors are quick without a turbo lol.

Throw the engine on and run it as is. See if you really need a turbo.

Been busy finishing up school and haven't done much lately. Having said that I have decided to go with the Stroker kit from ARC, this kit includes forged piston, rod and crank as well as an adjustable flywheel. Going to start ordering parts and get going on this thing over winter break.

You might be absolutely correct F22Master, however like I said there are people making around 35hp all motor. All of the turbo builds i have seen are more or less just people having a little fun and doing it as a joke. Many of the engines are on stock block and use pvc hose as charge piping lol. Im just going to give it some serious effort and see what we can get.

Can you link a 35hp engine? What sources are you going off of?

GX200 clone, are you using a Predator engine? Which cc?

that engine is a Honda gx200/ clone engine... started out nothing more then a predator or any other mid 200cc 6.5 clone

there are many kart engine builders that have 30+ hp 6.5 clone engines. I have seen many 50+hp 320 and up cc engines also most which have started out as 10 or 12 hp engines

about time someone has a go-kart thread, used to have a crg kart from the late 90's early 2000's with a cr125, totally worth fracturing my mandible
