USDM H22A4 to JDM H22A Swap - Help

okay i'm swapping out my h22a4 w/ a jdm h22a. i got the motor out and everything. the problem is that the wire harness that came w/ it is butchered. so i tried to use the usdm wire harness on the h22a. i realized that some of the plugs are different between the usdm and jdm. i asked 98vtec if using the usdm harness was possible and he said i just needed to swap the intake manifolds. on further inspection, i realized the dizzy plugs [one of two] don't match up. and a few other ones. idno what they're called so i'll let my pictures do the talking. any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

sorry i forgot the camera was set to blk&wht. usdm then jdm respectively.

what plug is that for?

https://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y2...x/CIMG5665.jpg
https://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y2...x/CIMG5664.jpg
the left of the two dizzy plugs do not match up.

https://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y2...x/CIMG5663.jpg
https://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y2...x/CIMG5662.jpg
the plug for the alt don't match so i swapped them.

https://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y2...x/CIMG5661.jpg
https://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y2...x/CIMG5660.jpg
the p/s pump pipe didn't match so i swapped them too.

https://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y2...x/CIMG5659.jpg
https://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y2...x/CIMG5658.jpg
anyone know what that plug is for?

https://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y2...x/CIMG5672.jpg
on the h22a, it has the two pipe stuff on the vss but the h22a4 doesn't. anyone know what they are? if i need theM? if i can just loop them together?

i swapped the ac compressor too cuz they chopped up the pipes for them.

https://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y2...CIMG5652-1.jpg
and the motors in question

after the swap i will be selling my h22a4 piece by piece. i know this is the wrong section but anyone interested gimme a pm w/ a reasonable price. everything goes minus a few valves, they're bent.

dude i figured you had read around on putting this engine in our BB6's. You need to swap the following things from your h22a4 onto the h22a:

alternator and bracket
power steering and bracket
ac compressor and bracket
lower timing cover
complete intake manifold (injectors, fuel rail...etc)
half shaft / intermediate shaft
distributor and coil

the outside of your engine is essentially going to be all off the a4

Re: USDM H22A4 to JDM H22A Swap - Help (98vtec)

i did search but a lot of the jdm h22a swaps were for the 4gen and the ones one the 5gen didn't really help much unless im completely blind and i missed something. but thanks a lot. i was starting to fear the worst.

Re: USDM H22A4 to JDM H22A Swap - Help (_BB6)

what about the vss on the jdm h22a? it has those two pipes? and why would i need to swap the half shaft/intermediate shaft? can't i just hook them up from the cv joint?

Re: USDM H22A4 to JDM H22A Swap - Help (_BB6)

you can loop those lines for the vss. I believe they had something to do with the power steering system on a 4th gen.

Re: USDM H22A4 to JDM H22A Swap - Help (Rosko)

you also need to swap oil pumps if you are keeping the h22a4 distributor, otherwise you can use the jdm distributor and you'll have to do a bunch of rewiring.

besides that do what Blake said https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

that's what we call ODB1 versus ODB2 https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emsmile.gif

aren't the half shaft/intermediate shaft the same for the jdm and usdm? wish i could compare them w/ the jdm one but the supplier chopped those suckers in half. damn i ordered all the parts required for the startup warranty last night.. came out to be $332

Re: USDM H22A4 to JDM H22A Swap - Help (_BB6)

alright so my friend henry and i have finally completed the swap. replaced the h22a4 w/ the jdm h22a along w/ complimentary a4 parts to supplement the usdm wire harness. got everything back together but the moment we start up the car this is what happens. take a look. any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

http://home.comcast.net/~mikelee22/CIMG5725.AVI

the motor will immediately die upon starting the car. the second-third time we start the car in the video it lasts the longest but that parade didn't last long.

anyone?

preludepower420 05-19-2007 02:34 PM

Got Spark?

flyrod 05-19-2007 07:10 PM

Re: (preludepower420)

Getting any ECU codes? The CEL should come on then go back off when you turn the ignition on. If it never comes on, check your grounds. Next check the basic fuel/spark/compression/timing stuff, and go from there.

Btw, why the swap? Did the A4 die?

ethereal2pt2 05-20-2007 08:44 AM

Re: (flyrod)

yeah i just rented a obd2 scanner yesterday. checked the code and it came up as P0335. i believe that's the crank shaft position sensor. i'm not sure why this is the problem cuz my buddy and i swapped the whole pump w/ the ckps just because of that. and the reason for the swap was because the a4 had 173k miles on it and some of the valves are bent. it's a long story but that's how it is. any thoughts on that? thanks.

My USDM h22a4 just died on me. I am about to order a JDM H22a and undergo this swap. Did you ever get your issues figured out? and should I undergo this swap?

Re: (dimenzi0ns)

if you have some car experience. at least one friend to help you. and a helms. then by all means, go for it. we got it finished in about a month but thats with ALOT of slacking.

Re: (HenryTypeS)

Hey man im doin the same swap and this should solve it as long as you havnt done it yet otherwise i'd say check if your dizzy is any good or plugs nd wires. Theres a crankshaft gear thats in the area of the oil pump. you need to swap it from your old motor. this will give your crank sensor a way to read wen your piston hits top dead center. let me know how it goes.

Re: (_darkrequiem.)

how much does the swap cost you
for parts?
any labor?
shipping?

thx

vietluder2k1 06-27-2007 04:10 PM

you swapped the oil pump housing right? on the oil pump housing, it should have the tdc and ckp sensor. maybe your ckp sensor was damaged when you swapped it. you should be able to use your old vss instead of just plugging up the holes. im having a shop do my swap right now, so i guess ill be running into the problems soon.

also curious why you need half/intermediate shaft. i am doing this swap shortly as well and would like to know

Re: USDM H22A4 to JDM H22A Swap - Help (91preyludesi)

You need the intermediate shaft because your driver side axle used to plug into the ATTS sysem that is if you had an SH model prelude so if you dont you already have it otherwise the intermediate shaft takes the place of ATTS. Luckely your axles will fit and you wont have to change them.

Re: USDM H22A4 to JDM H22A Swap - Help (jaskuloski97sh)

just double checking, you changed the oil pump from the h22a4 right??

DiMeNSi0N 07-20-2007 02:07 PM

I've done the swap but when i start the engine. It dies after a minute. I am getting a P0335 crank position sensor error code. I swapped the oil pump and housing so i could mount the sensor and I replaced the gear so it could read. Any other suggestions?

DiMeNSi0N 07-20-2007 05:58 PM

Re: (DiMeNSi0N)

Ok... Gotten past the crank sensor issue. Turns out that there is TWO gears that need to be swapped because each sensor reads its own gear. Problem I am having now is that I have NO oil pressure. Any suggestions?
