Type SH and Base comparison. Why the SH needs its own block code. *Pics Inside*

There is a lot more to the SH engine then many of us thought. Unless you have actually attempted changing an SH to a base then sit down and read as I go over the differences I noticed.

Obviously the largest difference is the lack of ATTS on the Base block. For those of you that do not know what the ATTS unit looks like here it is. ATTS is an electronically controlled differential utilizing a double clutch method. The ATTS unit uses ATF and can withstand apx 250 whp before the clutches begin to slip.

Notice the differences.

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v34/shakes/ATTS2.jpg

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v34/shakes/ATTS3.jpg

Now I would like to show the differences between the BASE and SH blocks. To start with here is a picture of the Base block.

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v...baseblock2.jpg

Compare that to the block of the SH.

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v...es/SHblock.jpg

The problems that I noticed were things such as the water pipe, the wiring harness, adapter plate locations, etc.

The wiring harness as far as I can tell now isn't too bad. The plastic covering had to come off and the tape had to be cut to allow more movement of sensor wires, but other then that its not too bad.

The water pipe is completely different. The hose from the SH will bolt onto the base and work, but its a VERY TIGHT fit. I would suggest switching water pipes if you can.

This isn't even getting into the internal differences, the interior differences, suspension, etc.

All in all, if you want to swap an SH for a base, be ready. Its a chore that's for sure.

As always, if you have more info please e-mail me and I will get it added / amended.

Special thanks go out to Mike for the base block pics and a MAJOR thanks to Eddie (PapaPark), Sam and Jussin for helping with the swap / driving to VA from NC to get my lame ass.

i always thought it'd be sweet to replace those clutches with something tougher so you could build the engine and run like 200 all motor whp. That would be awesome in the corners. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif to honda's best tested skid pad car of the 90s!

I assume you mean that ATTS clutches. And only 200whp? I thought you could, as stated here and in hundreds of other threads that state the atts threshold around 250WHP?

Isn't there a dowel or something on the bock that is different on the SH block?? Cause I've read about people swapping the non ATTS tranny onto the SH block, and they had to grind their block to get this piece off...

Maybe I'm crazy, but I thinkI've read it a few times around here

Great writeup, though, deserves a https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

Why do you HAVE to put a base modle transmission. Why cant you just put the Half shaft into the Sh tranny?

h22vtecguy 04-02-2006 06:26 PM

Re: Type SH and Base comparison. Why the SH needs its own block code. *Pics Inside* (Shakes)

Wont the half shaft splines fit into a Sh tranny because someone said the internals of the tranny itself are no differant, but I wouldnt think everyone would swap a base trans if they didnt have too.

i want to know something that had to do with this, is there any way to change the Type SH manual tranny with lets say an accord manual tranny? is the ATTS only for the auto? i have never seen that straight up answered.

yes you have to use a gheto adaport platethat mounts up to yourblock then mounts to the half shaft.

yes there are manual sh trannys
oh yea 2001 preludes came a h22a4 and its like a base block thats whats in my lude now https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emsmile.gif

CGags13 06-27-2006 10:02 PM

i like the idea of building an atts to work with more power...if the atts could work with more power it would beat the pants off an m2b4...im sure with a lotta cash the clutches inside could be made by a custom auto tranny race shop..then again anything can be made with the right amount of scrilla

98TypeSH 06-28-2006 08:40 AM

Re: (CGags13)

SH transmissions ONLY come/came in Manual. There is no Auto ATTS trans.
